12 questions: Sue Finley

Sue Morris Finley, Publisher & CEO of Thoroughbred Daily News, spent her childhood driving back and forth to Aqueduct, Belmont and Saratoga with her family. In 1993, she was part of the team that took over the production of Purebred Daily News and oversaw its move to Red Bank, NJ, to become its co-publisher. For 12 years she was First Vice President of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, a national organization dedicated to the humane retirement of old racehorses, and served three years on the board. of the Purebred Aftercare Alliance.

What were your race highlights of the year?

Undoubtedly, Flightline’s Breeders’ Cup. I bought Breeders’ Cup tickets early, secured an outdoor seat so I could see him in person, and then watched for a year that he would make it. It’s worth the wait.

Is there a moment in 2022 that you haven’t passed?

HISA chaos. I feel as if all of our lives and careers are hanging in the balance, and no one is in charge.

Who do you think, if anyone, is the equine breakout star of the year?

Forte. Totally took the lead in the Breeders’ Cup for minors to claim a third I. Rub.

What about a human breakout star?

It is the harmony between 26 incredible people working at TDN. Their journalistic skills and dedication to their work are second to none, and they have brought us to another record year. It was an honor to work with all of them.

Favorite international meeting?

I love going to the races in Deauville during the annual Arqana summer sale, but I think my favorite day at the races used to be at a little track outside Berlin called Hoppegarten. Most people at the track not only bring their dogs to races with them, but they all stand and applaud each horse as they return from the race win or lose.

All-time favorite purebred?

It is a binding. Affirmative, because my parents took me to see the Belmont Stakes in 1978 and that rekindled my love for the sport. And Renaissance Bob, whom we rescued from a carnage auction and spent 23 years at TRF’s Wallkill Correctional Facility, helps incarcerated men change their lives. Whole chestnuts, incidentally.

What is one change you would like to see happen in the race in the near future?

I want to watch video replays accessible anywhere for free. How can we promote this sport when we cannot see it and show it to others?

What or who surprised you the most this year? Be it a performance, a stallion, a sale price, etc.

Sharp Aztecawho is currently at the top of the first case list with 31 winners!

You can chat with a deceased person in the racing industry. Who are you talking to and what is the topic?

My father. I consider him an insider because he is one of our most important assets: a die-hard fan and a $2 bettor who loves nothing more than coming home with $10 profit after a long day at the track. And because I would give anything to talk to my dad again.

What is the biggest lesson you learned in 2022?

Don’t count your chickens.

Finally, what are you most looking forward to in 2023?

Explore the next Flightline. Is it too early to start looking for him?
