Local media reported that the accident happened when a truck crashed into a funeral in Nanchang county, Jiangxi province.
At least 17 people were killed and 22 others injured in a traffic accident in eastern China.
State broadcaster CCTV said the “serious road traffic accident” happened just before 1 a.m. local time on Sunday (17:00 GMT Saturday) in Nanchang county, Jiangxi province.
It cites authorities as saying that the injured have been taken to hospital and an investigation is underway to find the cause of the crash.
Local news agency Jimu, affiliated with Hubei Daily Media Group, reported that the accident happened when a truck crashed into the funeral.
People were making roadside offerings for the dead before planning to head to the crematorium on Sunday morning, a local woman surnamed Deng told the outlet.
Reports said they were hit by a truck, with most of the dead and injured being funeral attendees.
Another local man, surnamed Gong, told the outlet that his wife was killed in the accident and that they were attending the funeral.
He said the truck suddenly hit the end of the line, tearing the group apart before reaching the hearse.
About an hour after news of the accident surfaced, the Nanchang district traffic police issued travel advice to drivers saying the area was experiencing “foggy weather”.
“Poor driving visibility, low visibility is easy to cause traffic accidents,” it said.
“Pay attention to the fog lights… slow down, drive carefully, keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, avoid pedestrians, do not change lanes and overtake,” it added.
Road accidents are common in China due to the lack of strict safety controls.
Last month, one person died in a traffic jam on a highway in central China that involved hundreds of vehicles and was caused by poor visibility in the fog.
And last September, 27 passengers died after a bus carrying them to quarantine facilities in southwestern Guizhou province overturned on a highway.
