2022 Mercedes-AMG One hybrid supercar begins production
Mercedes-AMG started building its first customer limit One at a specialized manufacturing facility in the UK ahead of delivery in the second half of 2022.
Introduced as a Formula 1 road car, Mercedes-AMG One been done for a very long time.
Originally slated to launch in 2019, the One was held back by the challenge of making an F1-derived powertrain work on the road and meet ever-tightening emissions standards.
Only 275 Mercedes-AMG Ones will be produced and each will be handcrafted in collaboration with Canadian engineering and manufacturing company Multimatic.
There are 16 different assembly and test stations in the production of a Mercedes-AMG One, which the German high-performance car manufacturer likens to “production of high-quality luxury watches”.
Mercedes-AMG says some of the One’s “subsystems” are first pre-assembled and then tested to make sure they work, then disassembled again and finally fitted into the vehicle.
For example, this applies to the carbon fiber monocoque chassis with removable roof and body panels.
Each outer body plate is fitted to the frame to ensure that everything fits snugly and can be adjusted if necessary.
When everything is “perfect”, the body panels are removed and then hand painted like a car kit to ensure “the perfect color of the whole car”.
The next major production phase included assembling the F1-derived hybrid powertrain and bodywork in white, referring to when the car’s chassis was put together.
Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP) is the German automaker’s Formula 1 engine manufacturing company for F1 cars, and also builds engine components for the One.
Mercedes-AMG says 75% of the One’s components are assembled before the high-voltage components are installed.
The final stage of production is “final acceptance testing” at a nearby proof yard, where it is inspected by a factory test driver.
Once the Vehicle is marked for approval, the vehicle will be given “appropriate vehicle protection” and transported in a sealed van to Mercedes-AMG headquarters in Affalterbach, Germany for handover.
In total, there are more than 50 “experts” working on each Mercedes-AMG One.
“Mercedes-AMG ONE is the most ambitious project we have ever undertaken – from development to production,” said Mercedes-AMG Chairman Philipp Schiemer.
“This world first is becoming a reality thanks to the great teamwork between Mercedes AMG in Affalterbach, the Formula 1 experts at Mercedes ‑ AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth and its Multimatic production partner. we.”
Mercedes-AMG One is powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 hybrid engine manufacturing 422kW power and four electric motors manufacturing 450kW. It also has a 8.4kWh . battery pack.
One of these electric motors is an F1-style MGU-K mounted to the crankshaft, the other two are mounted to the front axle, and the last is fitted with a turbocharger to reduce lag.
The total system output is 782kW Power and top speed are electronically limited to 352km/h.
With a claimed curb weight of 1695kg, the 100km/h sprint takes 2.9 seconds, the 200km/h sprint takes 7.0 seconds and the 300km/h cruising takes 15.6 seconds.
