2022 MG ZS EV costs $46,990 to drive, with longer range

MG’s budget ZS EVThe second best-selling electric car in Australia after the Tesla Model 3, will get a major update from July this year to keep the momentum going.

Two variants will be offered this time, starting at $46,990 to drive before discounts for the Excite variant and rising to $49,990 for Nature ZS EV.

The new look version features an overhauled interior and a larger capacity 51kWh battery for more driving range, as well as a sleeker front design.

In contrast, the outgoing model (with a few extras at the base level) costs $44,990.

The new 2022 vehicle’s battery pack uses Model 3 model lithium iron phosphate chemistry designed to maximize stability and provide a claimed 320 km driving range – up from 263 km (WLTP).

MG has also updated the powertrain and claims to have improved the battery management electronics.

No local figures are provided, but overseas specs show the engine now making 130kW and 280Nm – up from 105kW and down from 350Nm. UK versions may take a 100kW DC charge, which we expect to move into this market.

Unfortunately, the longer range 72.6kWh version with a claimed 440km range on the WLTP cycle won’t be coming to Australia, with the company focusing on a shorter, more affordable model in current time.

Other improvements for the new 51kWh ZS EV in the Australian market include a flashing driving display, 10.1-inch touchscreen display, auto-dimming 21-module LED headlights, new LED tail lights, new 17-inch alloy wheels and a tweaked ‘radiator grille’ with an updated Type 2 charging port.

The revised MG ZS EV will be backed by a dealer network of more than 80 locations and a seven-year unlimited kilometer warranty.

MG also sold separately ChargeHub 7kW (single-phase) or 11kW (three-phase) home AC wall boxes are priced between $ 1990 and $2090, with the first 500 new ZS buyers receiving a $500 discount.

These boxes have open source software so are not locked only on MG products.

How does the MG ZS’s $46,990 driving price compare to the competition? The Base Model 3 costs $60,900 to drive, the Hyundai Kona Elite Standard Range costs around $59,000 to drive (depending on State), and the 40kWh Nissan Leaf costs $54,000.
