2023 Ram 1500 Review, Price and Specifications

overview

The current-generation Ram 1500 made its debut in 2019. (Its predecessor, however, continued to be the Ram 1500 Classic.) Since then, the full-size pickup segment has seen Updated entries from Chevrolet, Ford, GMC and Toyota. And yet, none of Ram’s opponents managed to steal its crown. The Ram 1500 is the best-feeling and most comfortable pickup of the bunch. Three powertrain options fill its engine list: a 260-horsepower 3.0-liter V-6, a 305-hp 3.6-liter V-6, and a 395-liter 5.7-liter V-8. horsepower, all using an eight-speed automatic transmission. For even more firepower, look for 702 hp RAM 1500 TRX, are considered separately. Ram’s foldable tailgate and locked bed are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the cleverness of this half-ton vehicle. Ram also offers the 1500 with a huge 12.0-inch infotainment screen for those who really want to show off. With an impressive 12,750-pound maximum towing rating and a penchant for luxury, the Ram 1500 is our favorite full-size pickup today.

What’s new for 2023?

This marks the last year Ram will offer the 1500 with the V-6 diesel available. New for 2023 is the limited edition of Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Part of Ram’s Built to Serve product line, the EMS edition celebrates first responders with specially designed markings and American flag decals on the bedsides. Available in Hydro Blue or Bright White, the 1500 EMS comes with a black painted grille and front grille, technical gray 20-inch aluminum wheels and black exhaust tips. Inside, the EMS version has a special front seat trim. The Ram 1500 EMS comes standard with the 4×4 Off-Road Group package, which includes tow hooks, some underbody skids and an electronically locked rear differential.

Pricing and which to buy

Although Ram 1500 TRX 702 hp (private review) reduces the Rebel’s desirability, we still think it’s half a ton of Ram to get. We would opt for the crew cab with all-wheel drive and spend the money to get the V-8 instead of the standard V-6. We will also add available air suspension for its selectable travel height. Since doing so requires a Level 1 or Level 2 package, we think the latter is the way to go, as it includes items like remote start, a 115-volt power outlet, front parking sensors, and rear, electrically adjustable pedals and passive hands-free entry. We’ll also get a 33-gallon fuel tank, which will greatly improve the truck’s driving range (26-gallon tank is standard). The only other options we recommend are the Safety and Convenience package (adaptive cruise, automatic high beams, lane keep assist) and Multi-function tailgatethis also yields a spray bed sheet.

Engine, transmission and performance

The Ram 1500 offers V-6 and V-8 petrol powertrains paired with a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission. Both engines are powered by a 48-volt hybrid system, although the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 is also available without electric assist. A diesel engine is also available for 2023, though Ram plans to discontinue production of the engine in January 2023. Until then, the 260-hp V-6 diesel has been under the hood of the car. 1500 Tradesman, Big Horn, Lone Star, Laramie, Limited Longhorn and Decoration Limited. For the adventurous, Rebel model for sure offers more aggressive looks and legal off-road capability. Each Ram 1500 offers an impressive ride thanks to a rear suspension that uses either standard coil springs or optional gas springs, unlike the traditional leaf spring setup on domestic rivals. Models equipped with an air suspension system can even adjust the travel height, helping to save fuel and off-road performance.

Towing capacity and payload

The Ram 1500 can tow up to 12,750 pounds and carry a payload of up to 2320 pounds. Its maximum towing capacity surpasses all but the Ford F-150, which currently tops 13,000 pounds. Rams with crew cabin body styles — including Rebel models — as models with extended cabins. However, the more passenger-friendly 1500 can still tow north at 11,500 pounds.

Real-world fuel economy and MPG

With V-6 and V-8 hybrid engines, as well as a diesel engine option, the Ram 1500 series offers a wide range of fuel economy possibilities. The EPA estimates that the most efficient Ram, the rear-wheel drive diesel, achieves a combined fuel economy of 26 mpg. Meanwhile, the V-6 and V-8 gas engines achieve 23 and 20 mpg, respectively. A Rebel 1500 with a V-6 petrol engine we tested returned 24 mpg on a 75 mph real-world fuel economy route, which is part of the Our extensive testing mode. That’s 6 and 4 mpg better than the V-8 Rebel and V-8 Laramie, lack of electrical support, we tested. For more information on the fuel economy of the Ram 1500, visit EPA’s website.

Furniture, Amenities and Merchandise

Inside, the Ram 1500 has extremely handy passenger space and cargo compartment. Higher trim adds premium materials and creature comforts, making the Ram feel more like a luxury vehicle than a pickup. Most models are available with premium features such as heated and ventilated seats and a panoramic sunroof, while the finest versions have premium leather finishes and genuine wood accents. As with most full-size pickups, the Ram 1500’s cockpit is extremely spacious. It also has a large amount of storage space inside and a unique foldable tailgate. Both 5-foot 7-inch and 6-foot 4-inch cargo beds are available, but the stretched body style is only available with the latter. Ram doesn’t offer the 1500 with a regular cab, although it does sell the previous generation truck, the 1500 Classic, with such body styling.

Infotainment and connectivity

The Ram truck has had one of the best infotainment systems and connectivity features in its class for a while. That continues to happen in the latest trucks, whose optional 8.4-inch or 12.0-inch touchscreens are available on all but the base Ram model. Too bad we had a lot of problems with the big screen during the process our 40,000-mile long-term test. Both systems are compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and even the larger touchscreen has some redundant buttons and knobs.

Safety and driver assistance features

Ram 1500 is available in a wide range of driver assistance technology including automatic emergency braking to lane keeping assist.
