Alex Albon in intensive care after appendicitis surgery complications
Williams’ racer Alex Albon is recovering in hospital after suffering respiratory failure following appendicitis surgery.
Albon missed the weekend’s Italian Grand Prix for surgery on Saturday.
The Thai driver experienced an “unexpected postoperative anesthetic complication” following the procedure and was taken to intensive care at Monza’s Ospedale San Gerardo, Williams confirmed in a statement Monday.
Albon was removed from the ventilator and moved back to the general ward after making good progress on Sunday.
He is expected to return home on Tuesday.
According to the statement, respiratory failure is a “known but uncommon complication”.
The team statement said that for now, Albon’s entire focus is on recovery and preparation over the next three weeks for the Singapore Grand Prix on October 2.
Dutch driver Nyck de Vries sided with Albon at the Monza race, finishing ninth.
