All you need to know about this day observed on April 18
International Day of Monuments and Sites is celebrated globally on April 18 each year to promote culture and heritage. World Heritage Day is another name for it. The International Council of Monuments and Monuments (ICOMOS), based in Paris, is the driving force behind this worldwide event.
Its goal is to encourage local communities and individuals to recognize the value of cultural heritage in their lives. The day also focuses on raising awareness about the diversity and vulnerability of cultural heritage, in addition to safeguarding measures.
History and importance
In 1982, ICOMOS proposed that April 18 be designated as International Day of Monuments and Places. The date was adopted by UNESCO during its 22nd General Conference the following year, and it has since become a global event. ICOMOS has proposed a theme for this day every year since.
Theme
The theme of World Heritage Day 2022 is Heritage and Climate. ICOMOS has called on its members, individuals and organizations to organize activities around this theme. This year’s theme offers an opportunity to answer questions about climate justice and equity for heritage protection. It is also an opportunity to discuss ways we can achieve equitable protection of vulnerable communities.
“This day provides a timely opportunity to showcase strategies to leverage the full potential of heritage conservation research and practice to deliver climate adaptation pathways to enhance sustainable development.” while advocating the transition to a low-carbon future” ICOMOS said.
The organization suggests that those wishing to organize an event can do so by choosing to cover topics related to disaster risk (climate and anthropogenic), indigenous heritage, conflict, heritage and democracy.
