Via Huck Allen: Antonio Tarver favors undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney over Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis right now after a decisive near-closer win in the 12th round over unified champion George Kambosos Jr. on June 5.
With the way Haney (28-0, 15 KOs) hit the previously undefeated Kambosos in front of the Australian boxer’s fans in Melbourne, Tarver put him at the top of the table by 135.
As for the fight between Devin and ‘regular’ WBA lightweight champion Tank Davis (27-0.25 KOs), Tarver doesn’t see the fight happening anytime soon. Tarver feels war needs to build between the two before they meet.
Meanwhile, Haney has plenty of opportunities to have some interesting games, thanks to him holding all four titles at 135th place.
Devin can take out any opponent he wants at lightweight, with the exception of Ryan Garcia, who seems only interested in fighting the Davis Tank.
“That war is too early. You know, they’re not going to come close to that kind of fight right now because it’s a super fight between two of what might be the best lightweight in the world right now,” Antonio Tarver told Against TV Hub when asked who won the clash between lightweight champion Devin Haney and Gervonta ‘The Tank’ Davis.
“Devin Haney has a lot to do; he is busy. He’s got all the belts he’s got to protect, and when you’re looking at guys like Teofimo and Loma, those guys are still out there, and Gervonta Davis will be out there, too,” Tarver said.
Tarver doesn’t know that Haney is planning to upgrade to 140 soon because he’s outgrowing the 135 lb division.
The exciting battles Tarver wants to see Haney in won’t happen unless those warriors move up to 140 to face him.
“Support, you have to go with the undisputed champion because he showed us so much in winning that fight. [against George Kambosos Jr],” Tarver said. “When you look at it, Loma is defenseless, Teofimo is defenseless, and Kambosos is defenseless.
“Now, we want to see, if Devin Haney can defend because they’ve played in the musical chair with the undisputed lightweight championship,” Tarver said.
“Let someone sit down and become the King of the light division for a short time. If it’s the undisputed champion, he’ll put the number on the seat and become the face of boxing. He’s a young black man doing his thing.
“If you haven’t seen the wave, the wave has happened in boxing. You’ve got Gervonta Davis, you’ve got Haney, and you’ve got Shakur Stevenson, who’s out there fighting for the junior unified lightweight championship, but he could move up at any moment.
“You have a lot of young black Americans moving the needle, and I wanted to see it,” Tarver said.
