Remember MagSafe? The Magnetic power cord stuck to the old charging port MacBook to prevent it from flying off the table when someone tripped over the power cord? Apple brought the innovative connector back to its premium product line MacBook Pro models last year, but the feature is now making its way into the most affordable laptop in its lineup: the MacBook Air. At WWDC 2022, Apple announced this new laptop alongside the new 13-inch MacBook Pro, both powered by the newly announced second-generation M2 processor.
Both the new 2022 MacBook Air and 2022 MacBook Pro will go on sale in July. The Air costs $1,199, and the new Pro starts at $1,299. Apple has discontinued the older M1-enabled MacBook Pro, but you can still buy it MacBook Air 2020 M1 Because $999. Here’s everything you need to know about this pair.
Air Beats Pro
Oddly enough, the new (and cheaper) MacBook Air is one of the two newest laptop models. For example, it picks up some of the design changes introduced with the more expensive MacBook Pro models from 2021, including thinner bezels around the display and a notch for the webcam, creating a large 13.6-inch display. slightly more than the new MacBook Pro. 13.3 inch screen.
Despite the larger screen, the Air shed some weight compared to its predecessor. It weighs 2.7 pounds and is just 0.44 inches thick when fully closed, bringing “air” back to the MacBook Air as one of Apple’s lightest laptops. For comparison, the Pro weighs 3 pounds and is 0.61 inches thick.
It also means that the new MacBook Air can take advantage of the upgraded 1080p webcam for better quality during video calls, while the new MacBook Pro is stuck with the same old 720p camera. The Air also has a four-speaker setup for better sound than the MacBook Pro’s stereo speakers, although Apple suggests the microphone is studio quality on the Pro while the Air uses less of a standard microphone.
Both still have the same 2K IPS LCD screen, and the MacBook Air can be brighter than its predecessor, matching the MacBook Pro’s screen brightness of 500 nits. Speaking of displays, the MacBook Pro remains the only Mac in Apple’s lineup to feature a Touch Bar display above the Magic Keyboard, a feature that has never been popular. The MacBook Air has physical function keys, although both have Touch ID. (Not available still there’s no Face ID on a Mac.)
