Australia ace Oscar Piastri becomes F1 reserve driver
The rise of motorsport Oscar Piastri continues with the confirmation of the young Australian as a reserve driver for Alpine Formula one team in 2022.
The 2020 Formula 3 world champion will of course support that success in this year’s Formula 2 championship, leading the streak with three wins and seven mainline positions.
With two rounds left, Piastri is on her way George Russell and Charles Leclerc in an elite club to get consecutive F3 and F2 titles as a rookie.
While it is not possible to secure an F1 seat for next year, Piastri’s move to a reserve driver’s seat means he will enter extensive testing and be fit enough to race in the sport’s elite category if have a chance.
“I am extremely excited to be joining the Alpine F1 Team as a reserve driver,” said the 20-year-old.
“I look forward to being more attached to the team and contributing to the expected success next season.
“The reserve driver role is the next step towards my goal of getting a seat in the race in 2023, which is very exciting.”
The news is a bonus for Piastri, who will not be able to continue racing in F2 if he wins this year’s title.
“I’ve proven myself in junior formulas over the last few years and feel like I’m now ready for Formula 1,” he said.
“Along with the experience on the track over the race weekends, we will jointly undertake a substantial program of testing to continue to develop ourselves to be even better prepared for the race seat. .”
With the 2022 role already secured, Piastri will focus all of its attention on securing the F2 title, with the next event at Jeddah in Saudi Arabia from December 3 to 5.
The season finale in Abu Dhabi takes place the following weekend from December 10-12.
