Battlefield 2042 Killed My Favorite Game Mode, That’s Bad

As Battlefield 2042 continue to be tired somewhere in hell between “launch failed” and “whatever happens next”, the DICE developers are making small tweaks to the game to keep things running smoothly. Though I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of their latest effort.

When the game launched, it launched with a bunch of game modes, including Portal (an older exotic soup Battlefield custom rules and games) and some small-scale co-op content, but really, the main events — and those featured on the main menu under the big SHARE ALL banner — are Conquer and Breakthrough.

Conquest is your standard Battlefield mode, where the player rushes to capture and hold control points on the map, but Breakthrough is a more conventional type of war where the two sides will simply attack it on the map, concentrating fire ( and casualties) into a suitable front line. And while the former was considered the most popular way to play the game, the latter has now removed the 128-player mode from the game.

As DICE explains:

In this update, we will be making many updates to the All-Out Warfare spins. Our top change is the removal of the 128-player version of Breakthrough. When looking at the experiences available in All-Out Warfare, we feel that 128 player modes are more suitable for Conquest, where the game space is larger and where you are more suited to sandbox gameplay.

In Breakthrough’s 128-player mode, we feel that the value and impact of individual players and squads is reduced due to the increased intensity and chaos of the battle.

I get what they mean and understand that they’re reacting to the concerns of multiplayer, but I’m really frustrated because it’s my favorite game mode. I love the “intensity and chaos” of the battle, that is why i play Battlefieldand every time i find myself on the front lines with explosions rumbling all around, tanks burst into flames and jets crash meters away from my position I thought, dammit yes, this is exactly type Battlefield experience that I have been waiting for decades.

However, as I’ve discovered in the months since launch, so many things i love Battlefield 2042 are the things that longtime fans hateand so DICE made the decision to limit the Breakthrough mode to only 64 player version, which gives everyone more space to breathe and run around, especially since half the map will still be played on their 128 player version.

As a result, teams in Breakthrough 64 have a better chance of working together, to hit an enemy, set a beacon to appear, use their plus menu to attach suppressors, then clear and keep a point – a team that helps turn the tide as an example. We believe the move to 64 players will provide a pace that celebrates these moments of teamwork and PTFO, and will keep a close eye on our changes to improve the experience before starting. beginning of Part 1.

So RIP, breakout 128 players. You are my favorite game mode, but then the fact that I haven’t been able to play the game on the Australian servers for months — because no one else wants to play — probably indicates that DICE is responding to players have a much broader opinion about this game than mine.
