Some might say that all we do here is travel. Incorrect! We do experimentation sometimes, and if there happen to be some good roads between the offices and the proof zone, it would be a crime not to explore them. It’s true that it’s inherent in driving a car to consider driving more miles, but even so, some rides and cars feel more special than others. In 2022, we increased the miles and turned them into word counts. Some trips have become travel guides to great destinations by car such as palm stream and Colorado. Other ways are how to test the device like radar detector—not any of us would ask for such a thing—or long term car. Our favorites, though, are rides that make us rethink a road or a car; trips that take us to new places and new people, adventures we’re still thinking about.

Road trips can be solo or in groups, but there’s something more exciting about hitting the runway with a friend. In June, newes editor Caleb Miller and social media editor Michael Aaron got behind the wheel of a 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 Touring and drove to Toronto to attend Rare Shades 6, an exhibition The annual car show for Paint to Sample and other unusually colored Porsches. When asked to comment, Aaron simply replied: “Check it out car and driver Instagram.”
When driving a 420hp Volvo P1800 ’64 is just the second most important part of your journey, you know you’ve won the trip lottery. We drove the modified Volvo Cyan Racing through the golden hills of California looking for . . . Switzerland? In the 1900s, Kingsburg, California, went from a refuge of the Wild West to the largest concentration of Swedish immigrants in the state. Today, it still highlights its cultural heritage, and the townspeople were delighted to pick up the Volvo and take us home full of Swedish pancakes.
Sometimes we have to move a car and ourselves, from place to place—not for a story, but for efficiency. That’s not to say it can’t be interesting, as when senior editor Drew Dorian drove across Florida in a Bentley Continental GT. “Things aren’t going to be pretty until you’re south of Homestead, where the suburbs of Miami end and the marshlands begin. Here you become acquainted with the area’s only major thoroughfare: Highway 1. This stretch of sidewalk runs through nearly all of the Florida Keys, and along its path you’ll find a mix of resorts. Luxury resort shares the property line with the charming 1950s-era motel. The late summer sun was so scorching that we couldn’t bring down the hood of the Bentley. But at night, the weather is cool enough to enjoy driving in a convertible, and the region’s dark skies are star-studded, especially when crossing the famous Seven Mile Bridge, which connects the Knights Key and Little Duck Key with ocean on both sides. The trip would have been as easy if we were in a Chevy, but the natural beauty of the Florida Keys and the ultimate luxury of a Bentley convertible are a much better combination.” Indeed, we suffer because of work.

Brother, can you spare a fee?
All good trips involve making friends along the way, stopping at roadside cafes, or just chatting at gas stations. We had plenty of opportunities to do that after driving the BMW i4 M50 on a lakeside adventure looking for people to share their home charging network. We met many generous souls and enjoyed the beauty of Michigan in late summer. One detail that didn’t make it into the final story was that both the driver, Scherr (which was me) and the photographer, Michael Simari, both got food poisoning, and Simari ended up vomiting in his parking lot. Applebees. “I’m so sorry,” he mumbled as we quickly escaped. “Don’t worry, man,” I told him. “This isn’t the first time someone has vomited in the Applebees parking lot, and it won’t be the last.” Thankfully, that is the ultimate emergency in this story.

Speaking of fantasy, Ezra Dyer photographed two of the year’s best street huggers on one of California’s prettiest streets. He raced the Maserati MC20 against a Porsche” 911 Turbo S on the California coast north of Los Angeles and hiked the hills and high desert for several days through the hidden corners of 33rd Street, the big bends and long, desolate lines. Who cares which car wins when you’re on a road like this?
What better way to learn the appeal of a classic roster than by running multiple states. From dangling Spanish moss to the Florida coast, we’ve enjoyed BMW’s M cars in a delicious way.
Our best road trip of the year though not on the sexiest car and it certainly doesn’t offer the best scenery. Contributor Jonathon Ramsey reminded us all that the life most worth living is a life of giving to others when he loaded a Dacia pickup truck and spent a night in Poland delivering supplies. for Ukrainian refugees.
