BMW claims victory over Mercedes for the first time in 6 years
BMW AG says it beat Mercedes-Benz in global premium car sales last year, the first time it overtook its German rival since 2015.
“Proud to claim the number one position in the global premium automotive segment for the BMW brand in 2021,” BMW’s head of sales Pieter Nota wrote in a LinkedIn post on Monday. , recognizing the victory belongs to the product line and the company’s operating performance.
BMW hasn’t detailed full-year sales yet, but deliveries have followed the Daimler AG brand for most of this year. The Munich-based carmaker has been less affected by the global shortages in semiconductors that have made production lines difficult globally.
Some automakers that signaled the worst of the chip crisis would be over after a rough third quarter have begun to return to those expectations. On Monday, Mercedes said tight parts supplies would continue to hold back the industry in the first half of this year and urged more capacity globally.
BMW will report its full-year sales on January 12, according to a spokesman. Earlier, the company said that the automaker had delivered 1.7 million BMW-branded vehicles, surpassing Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz by more than 112,000 vehicles.
