Brittney Griner case: US offers to exchange Russian arms dealers

Chairperson Joe Biden did not give up carrying Brittney Griner go home.

His administration is said to have offered Russia a deal to trade convicted Russian arms dealers Viktor Bout– who is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence in the US – for releasing the WNBA athlete and Paul Whelan, multiple sources told CNN. The exchange, which has been in discussion since June, has received Biden’s backing, according to the outlet.

“We have announced an important offer that we believe can be successful based on the history of conversations with the Russians,” a senior administration official told CNN. “We announced that a few weeks ago, in June.”

The official explained that trade will only succeed if Russia “meets it”.

In a press conference on July 27, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the US had “placed an important proposal on the table many weeks ago to facilitate” Brittney and Paul’s release, according to NBC News. While he did not share any additional information, the Foreign Minister has announced that he plans to speak with the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in the next few days.
