Brittney Griner hopes to close the gap with Baylor, watch retirement jerseys

Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner said that her shirt’s retirement at Baylor despite not having played a game at school since she fell out with former Bears women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey over eight years ago.

“I witnessed that special moment with so many of my teammates and friends at their schools where they gave their all,” Griner said on Thursday of the thought of retiring the shirt. mine. “I met my wife at Baylor. Baylor is of my blood. I love the school. I love Waco. And it means so much to me. It’s something I will certainly cherish and love. like.”

Griner, from Ekaterinburg, Russia, where she plays football abroad, said she wishes both her alma mater and Mulkey well. Griner and Mulkey split in the spring of 2013, after Griner told reporters she was encouraged to keep quiet about her sexuality while in Baylor. Griner went public before being drafted at No. 1 overall by Mercury in 2013. She also wrote a book in 2014 addressing some of the struggles she faced regarding her sexuality.

She said her comments at the time were not directed at Mulkey personally but were aimed at the general atmosphere of not feeling encouraged to open up about sex and in accordance with Baylor’s policies, including a statement in the student handbook states that sex should be limited to heterosexual marriage. Baylor, a private Baptist university, passed a resolution in May pledging to support all students, “regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity,” but the resolution also punishes “important sexual relations of any kind outside of marriage.”

Mulkey, who left Baylor in April to take over as LSUThe girls’ basketball coach, told ESPN she will always be grateful for what Griner did at school.

Griner said she and Mulkey discussed it at one point after she left Baylor, but they did not communicate.

“That’s what I thought maybe we could talk about that,” Griner said of their departure. “But it’s not really…not with open ears, maybe from both sides, from me or her. We’re probably two strong individuals. So it’s tough. But I definitely wish Kim. I know LSU has a good coach. So I’m very happy for her.”

Griner, 31, said her time at Baylor, including the 40-0 national championship in 2011-12, was special for her.

“I still love Baylor and I plan to go back now and watch a game,” said Griner, who officially completed his school degree in the summer of 2019. “I haven’t been in a game since.” since I left. [in 2013]. I plan to hit my first game this month and support Coach Nicki [Collen] over there. I have a lot of respect for her. “

Collen, who took over the Bears’ job in May, indicated at Big 12 media day in October that Griner’s 42nd retirement was what Baylor was talking about.

Griner is a three-time Player of the Year holding the Division I record for saved shots at 748 and is fourth on the career goalscorers list with 3,283 points. She said she’s excited for Baylor and senior star NaLyssa Smith, a possible No. 1 pick who Griner thinks would be a brilliant WNBA player.

“I’m biased, but I’m a huge fan of hers,” Griner said.
