Winnipeg native Nick Taylor hit a record 63 in the third round of the RBC Canada Open on Saturday afternoon, putting him at the top of the standings with a clubhouse lead of 11 points below .
Going into the third round, Taylor was held to a 47th-place draw with a two-under before hitting nine birdies to end a nine-under.63 on the day, setting a record at Oakdale Golf and Country Club. Tyrrell Hatton has kept the previous mark of 8 below, which he set on Friday.
“I just said earlier it’s like a continuation of yesterday,” Taylor said after her round. “Yesterday I drove it great. Did it again today. Just started hitting the ball. I feel like I booked very well this year. … I actually won a pair at the end of the first day when I was trying to see the ball finally go into the hole. I’ve been off to a great start in the past few days.
“The front nine can obviously be very difficult. And being 4-, 5-under in the last few days will give you a lot of motivation to go behind 9 points where it is easy to score. So driving it well, keeping it as out of the way as possible and hitting the ball is always a good recipe here.”

When asked what was different from his opening round, Taylor replied:
“My wife spoke to me on Thursday night,” he said. “I’m just going my own way. I probably had a very bad attitude when taking shots that might not end up as I wanted. So I knew my game was there, but a little kick in the ass didn’t hurt.”
Oakdale actually has 27 holes on its property and is using a synthetic course for the PGA Tour event.

A Canadian hasn’t won at home since Pat Fletcher did so in 1954 at Point Gray Golf and Country Club in Vancouver. Several other Canadians hope to end the drought before the finals in Toronto.
Corey Conners finished the second round with 3 under 69 to place second with 8 under. The native Listowel, Ont., is now three shots back after Taylor’s dominant performance, with a later tee time.
Other Canadians in the hunt include Adam Hadwin (68) of Abbotsford, BC, and Roger Sloan (70) of Merritt, BC, tied for 17th with five points below.
Edmonton’s Wil Bateman, playing in his first Canadian Open and only his second PGA Tour event, rose to the top of the leaderboard with a bottom six on Friday.
