If Golovkin wants a lucrative fourth fight against Canelo, he has to beat him this time. Otherwise, the rivalry will end well with their September fight.
Canelo will need to fight Golovkin faster than he shows because he doesn’t throw a lot of punches and requires frequent breaks. Alvarez’s heart rate is low, and it’s unclear if his coach Eddy Reynoso will be active on that area in his game.
Barrera believes that the third matchup will not involve tactics but that Canelo (57-2-2, 39 KOs) will take the knockout stage against 40-year-old Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs).
Canelo was heavily questioned from his first two bouts with Golovkin in 2017 & 2017, with many boxing fans believing he should have been beaten twice.
Canelo needs to beat Golovkin in a way that leaves no doubt this time, as many feel the referees have favored the Mexican star.
Scores are as bad as Canelo’s recent one-sided loss to WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol on May 7, they are arguably much worse in his two bouts with Golovkin.
The first match was just a joke, with Canelo being scored 10-2 by a referee in a match that Golovkin looked likely to win 8-4. Both matches were held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the same venue where Canelo played Bivol.
