The CBI has charged three people, including Anand Giri, with abetting and conspiracy to commit crimes related to The alleged suicide of Mahant Narendra Giri — the head of the top religious body Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad, who was found hanged in his ashram in UP’s Prayagraj in September.
In addition to Anand, disciples of Narendra Giri, Adya Prasad Tiwari and Sandeep Tiwari are also on the charge sheet. All three are named in Narendra Giri’s suicide note; he accused them of mentally harassing him, after which the police filed a complaint with the FIR on charges of abetting the suicide.
All three defendants have been in prison, was arrested 24 hours after the death of Narendra Giri.
And 48 hours later CBI received the case on the recommendation of the UP government.
The agency recovered the tapes of conversations between the defendants and they were sent for forensic examination. The court also turned over voice samples of Anand Giri and other defendants, which they wanted to compare with the recovered tapes.
The defendant refused to consent to the voice recording.
In September, police said Narendra Giri filmed a video on his mobile phone – an hour before the alleged suicide – in which he said he was afraid Anand Giri wants to make a transformation photo his relationship with a woman, and that he (his disciple) wanted to embarrass him.
Police say the allegations in the video coincide with a 13-page suicide note found near his body. Police also said in the note, Narendra Giri accused all three men of blackmailing him and talking about being depressed.
Anand Giri – the virtual number 2 in the ashram – was expelled by Narendra Giri earlier this year on charges of financial fraud and misconduct, but seems to have returned.
A video shows him seeking forgiveness from his mentor, but the patch was short-lived and accusations of blackmail resurfaced.
Shortly after the seer was found dead, Anand Giri – details of the person’s flashy lifestyle, apparently including skydiving trips in Australia and driving Lamborghini sports cars at a racetrack, was soon published – accused of a conspiracy “by extortionists of Narendra Giri”.
Prime Minister Modi, UP Minister Yogi Adityanath, Samajwadi Party Chief of Staff Akhilesh Yadav and other political leaders have posted their condolences over the death of Narendra Giri.
