CITY GUIDE: Olympia, Greece • Perennial Style
When most of us think of a getaway in Greece, a romantic getaway in Santorini or a week of beach parties in Mykonos are often the first things that come to mind – but Greek culture and history predates these coastal vacations, so it’s time to grab those history books and explore. Discover the special landmarks that put this beautiful getaway on the map.
Follow right behind the Acropolis in Athens (note: if you’re a tourist who likes a cocktail with culture on the side, click here), Olympia is the second most important archaeological site in Greece. As the birthplace of the Olympic games, planning a day trip to this quaint site to discover where the competition began is definitely worth a visit.
Olympia is located to the west of the Peloponnese in mainland Greece. While I wouldn’t recommend a long stay in Olympia, it’s a nice stop after a visit Athens (be sure to check Athens Hotel). Olympia is a 3.5-hour drive from Athens, and if you don’t rent a car for your journey, you can easily schedule a day trip with a local tour agency.
Even though Olympia is a small town, you can mix a lot of cultures in an afternoon visit, so today I’m sharing everything you need to discover on a day trip up Olympia:
Discover Archaeological Site of Olympia
The archaeological site of Olympia was the site of the ancient Olympic games held every four years in honor of Zeus. Although it was once home to the statue of Zeus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, believed to have been destroyed in a fire and natural causes – you can still explore the ruins. site of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Wear comfortable shoes and spend some time exploring the ruins of the Temple of Zeus and the Temple of Hera, then head to the quaint Old Stadium to experience the original Olympic Games venue. We challenged each other to a race, and it was so much fun, it was an experience to remember!
Visit the Archaeological Museum of Olympia
Known as one of the finest museums in Greece, the Archaeological Museum of Olympia displays ancient statues and finds from Olympia, as well as other excavations in the area. Two of the must-see exhibits include the ancient Hermes statues of Praxiteles and the Nike Paionios.

After a day of walking, head to Olympia Gi for wine tasting and stunning views. Explore the vineyards and spend the afternoon enjoying the serene scenery from the mansion’s courtyard.
