Collin Morikawa Wins DP World Tour To Be The First American To Be No. 1 In Europe

British Open champion, Ryder Cup winner and currently the first American to finish a season as the European Tour’s No.

It’s been a year for Collin Morikawa.

The 24-year-old Californian showed off his world-class snooker play by making five birdies in his final seven holes to overhaul the lackluster Rory McIlroy and won the DP World Tour Championship with an overall score of 6 under 66 on Sunday.

With a win in three shots, Morikawa claimed the Race to Dubai title as the score leader on the European Tour.

“It’s an honor to be the first American to do that, naming me among so many great people and the Hall of Fame,” Morikawa said. “It’s special. I get emotional just talking about it.

“To end it not only with the top 10 but to actually win… what a great way to end.”

McIlroy started the final round with a one-stroke lead, and was three shots ahead of Morikawa, but made it through three of his last four holes and closed with a score of 74. Tied in sixth, he fell short. Morikawa five hits.

Matt Fitzpatrick, the 2020 World Tour Championship champion and one of five players who started the week with a chance to overtake Morikawa in the Race to Dubai leaderboards, launched a stunning final day attack from second place. 13 after the third round. He quickly took the lead after birdie in 15th place – his seventh of the day at the time – and even contested the Race to Dubai championship.

His hopes were lost on the very next hole as he drove into a fairway bunker and hit right, straight into the water, and hit the first of two straight shots.

Fitzpatrick shot 66 and drew second with Alexander Bjork (70).
