Colorado Rockies Lock up Ryan McMahon with 6-year, $70 million extension

Midfielder Ryan McMahon and Colorado Rockies agreed on a six-year extension on Monday, a one-week limit of spending during which the team secures more than a quarter of a billion dollars in wages.

Sources told ESPN that the deal is worth $70 million.

McMahon, 27, is having the best season of his career, as he hit the .254 / .331 / .449 mark and played elite defense in the third and second base. It is expected that he will remain the starting third warrior of the Rockies even after Kris Bryant signed a seven-year, $182 million free agency deal with Colorado last week.

McMahon’s contract will exclude him from free agency access after the 2023 season and tie him to an organization that has a history of renewing mature domestic players. Before locking the door, the Rockies gave right-handed people Antonio Senzatela a 5 year contract, worth 50.5 million dollars and they previously locked the right arm German Marquezmidfielder Charlie Blackmon and the third warrior Nolan Arenadowhom they traded last year with St. Louis.

While McMahon’s strength dissipated in the second half of last season, he was a pivotal figure in the Rockies’ roster and a versatile player on the field. If he takes the leap at 27 that many have and makes himself into the top 5 in MVP voting over the next three years, McMahon will be able to opt out of the deal after season four. The contract requires a salary of $5 million in 2022, $9 million in 2023, $12 million in 2024 and 2025, and $16 million in 2026 and 2027.

McMahon roamed the field for five seasons in Colorado, with Arenado releasing third base, a position he played in the minor leagues. His 23 home runs last year fell once from the peak of his career, and his 86 RBIs and 80 runs have set high water milestones. McMahon’s hit rate also dropped below 25% for the first time thanks to a reduced hit rate.

Even signing with Bryant, shortstop Jose Iglesiasreliever medicine Alex Colome and start Chad Kuhl This winter, the Rockies are not expected to compete in a fully loaded National League West that includes the two winners of 2021, San Francisco and Los Angeles, along with San Diego. The Rockies have lost two of their best players to agency freedom in the short run Trevor’s storywho signed a contract with Boston, and right-hand man Jon Graywho went to Texas.
