Danielito Zorrilla gets a golden opportunity to face Regis Prograis in New Orleans
Via Vince D’Writer: Superlightweight competitor Danielito Zorrilla gets a golden opportunity as he prepares to travel to New Orleans to challenge WBC champion Regis “Rougarou” Prograis (28-1, 24 KOs) on Saturday, June 17 at the Center Smoothie King in New Orleans, live on DAZN.
Two-time 140-pound world champion Regis Prograis announced his return to home fight in the Canelo vs. Ryder May 6. Unfortunately, weeks after the announcement, his opponent Liam Paro had to withdraw from the match due to an Achilles injury.
The match was later awarded to WBC 4th place competitor Arnold Barboza Jr, but a deal never materialized. With three weeks to go before the night of the fight, Danielito Zorrilla has agreed to take on Prograis because he now has a chance to play the spoiler and win the world championship.
Zorrilla is a skilled ultralightweight athlete promoted by former quadruple world champion Miguel Cotto. Puerto Rican boxing legend Miguel Cotto believes his boxer is a hard worker, aspirational and he is ready to become a world champion.
A product of Toa Baja, Puerto Rico, Danielito Zorrilla made his professional boxing debut in November 2016 when he scored a TKO victory over Jesus Gonzalez. After a successful debut, Zorrilla went on to win fifteen consecutive matches.
As he slowly worked his way up the rankings, Zorrilla applied for a tough test in July 2022, when he agreed to face Arnold Barboza Jr. Zorrilla succeeded early in the right-hand fight, but as Barboza increased his work rate, he was able to take over and land a decisive unanimous victory.
After suffering the first defeat in his professional boxing career, Danielito Zorrilla returned to the ring eight months later. His comeback bout was brief as Zorrilla scored a first-round TKO win over Aristides Quintero.
Now, 29-year-old Danielito “El Zorro” Zorrilla (17-1, 13 KOs) has a chance of a lifetime, as he will fight for a world title on June 17. Zorrilla will enter the match as the underdog, but he plans to participate in the return to his hometown and play the spoiler.
In the last two matches of Matchroom Boxing, Montana Love lost her homecoming dues to disqualification to Steve Spark, and Katie Taylor lost by unanimous decision in a home match against the champion. Chantelle Cameron’s undisputed ultralightweight.
Danielito Zorrilla is hoping he can continue this trend by eliminating a major disappointment in the WBC champion’s backyard. Zorrilla is a boxer who understands distance perfectly, and he’s always ready to deliver sharp counter-attacks. He is confident in his abilities and he is confident that he will be able to overcome difficulties by June 17.
