Derek Chisora could fight Zhang, Hrgovic or Wardley next says Eddie Hearn
Via Charles Brun: Eddie Hearn says he wants Derek Chisora to fight to stay busy by fighting Zhang Zhilei, Filip Hrgovic or Fabio Wardley next after a tenth-round knockout loss to the WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury last Saturday night.
Chisora is said to have suffered a jaw injury during his loss to Fury, and it is unknown when he will return to action after that fight.
It would be unsportsmanlike if Chisora were to be fed to Olympic athletes Hrgovic or Zhang because they are bigger boxers than Fury and have better physiques. They also look younger than Fury and it would be crazy if Chisora was thrown into the ring against either of those heavyweights.
Hearn would rather meet 38-year-old Chisora (33-13, 23 KOs) retire after knocking he took down Fury (33-0-1, 24 KOs) who he felt “hold him up rather than giving it all up last night at Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium in London.
Chisora made it clear in a post-fight interview that he NOT will retire from boxing, and he will continue. The dilemma Chisora faces is that he’s used to the big bucks, spoiled for choice in well-paid fights with Fury, Dillian Whyte, Vitali Klitschko and Kubrat Pulev.
It is unclear whether Chisora believes he will be handed another large sum of money by one of the British heavyweights. Fury would be deemed to have lost his temper if he gave Chisora a fourth chance to fight.
Anthony Joshua will never fight Chisora because he doesn’t want to be laughed at the way Fury is.
The best chance Chisora has for his final payday is if Dillian Whyte chooses to take on him in a duel. Whyte is also basically a practitioner, but he is well known in the UK.
It will be a terrible war, but the British public will greedy see and potentially pay to see it on pay-per-view.
It will be difficult for Chisora, an older journeyman, to mentally adjust from being paid well to receiving a lower salary than the typical candidate.
For starters, the odds of Chisora beating the 39-year-old man Zhang Zhilei (24-1, 19 KO) thin and no. Although Zhang is technically older than Chisora, he has a better background, has twice competed in the Olympics in China, and possesses more strength.
It’s fair to say that if Chisora had fought the massive 6’6″ tall Zhang, he would have been brutally taken down in six rounds one-way. Zhang is a much better boxer than Fury, and he wouldn’t spend 90% of the time leaning on Chisora rather than knocking him down with heavy blows to the head.
Chisora will be lucky to last six rounds with Zhang as he will tee off at him, and most of it just depends on how old Fury is doing.
“He can go back and fight Zhang, or he can fight Hrgovic or Wardley.but he has also made a huge amount of money over the last few years,” Eddie Hearn told iFL TV tells the story of dashing 38-year-old journeyman Derek Chisora after his unilateral defeat to Tyson Fury last Saturday night in London.
Domestic boxer Wardley (15-0, 14 KOs) would be a good pick for Chisora, but the amount probably won’t be big. Also, Chisora will be against it when facing him as 27 year old Wardley is a lot younger and he can punch.
If you had to pick any semi-famous fighter for Chisora to fight next, Wardley would be the best choice because at least Derek would have a chance to win. Wardley is very easily hit and is vulnerable to the chin. Furthermore, Wardley doesn’t own Zhang or Hrgovic’s pedigree, so Chisora isn’t expected to play against him as he would against those Olympic athletes.
Hearn said: “We all love him and I think now is a great time to hang them. “Tyson Fury picked him up a bit, but Derek was brave when they arrived, and he wasn’t going to stop,” Hearn said of Chisora.
