The current generation Amarok is in its final stages, as it has been in production since 2010. The next generation Amarok will be built on the same basis as the new generation Ford Ranger.
Volkswagen has tease its new Amarok a number of times already and it will go on sale in 2022.
We’re not sure exactly how much visual separation there will be between the Amarok and Ranger, but we can see in official previews that the new Amarok will feature exactly the same side mirrors as the ones used used on the current Ranger.
Powering the new-generation Ranger at launch are single- and bi-turbo four-cylinder diesel engine options, as well as a 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel V6.
There is also baja-ready Ranger Raptor equipped with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 petrol engine.
At this stage, it is not clear whether the new generation Amarok will share these engines.
With most racetracks being jointly developed, the difference is usually limited to the unique front and light signatures.
That said, the previous generation Mazda BT-50 and the upcoming pair of Ford Rangers have very different exterior and interior designs.
In 2021, Volkswagen sold a total of 7659 Amarok 4×4 models, outselling them all Ford Ranger 4 × 4 (sales 45,986), Toyota Hilux 4×4 (39,587 sales), Isuzu D-Max 4 × 4 (18,639) and Mitsubishi Triton 4×4 (16,333 sales).
