Details of Volvo C40 Recharge single engine version
Volvo has detailed a single-engine version of its C40 electric crossover SUV, which will also join the (already revealed) dual-engine model in Australia in the third quarter of 2022.
Single engine C40 recharge ‘coupe SUV’ has an “expected” range of up to 434km on a WLTP cycle and uses a 69kWh battery that Volvo says can go from 10 to 80% in 32 minutes using a DC fast charger.
Meanwhile, the familiar dual-motor C40 model, with a larger capacity 78kWh battery, has a range of 444 km and takes 37 minutes with a DC fast charger.
The sleeker C40 has a slightly longer range than its more pragmatic XC40 platform companion, with a range of 380 km (single engine) and 418 km (dual engine).
The single-engine, front-wheel-drive C40 Recharge uses a preset drivetrain with 170kW of power and 330Nm of torque, while the dual-engine full-time four-wheel drive model makes 300kW of total power and 660Nm. These outputs are identical to the XC40 Recharge.
The 0-100km/h claim time is 7.2 seconds for the single engine and 4.7 seconds for the dual engine – 0.2 seconds faster than the equivalent XC40s.
All charger models C40 and XC40 support DC fast charging with capacity up to 150kW and AC charging up to 11kW.
XC40 Recharge MY23 Upgrade brought in refreshed UI styling to make it more closely resemble the unreleased C40.
Think of the C40 and XC40, then, as coupe and wagon variants of the same car. The 2 from sister brand Polestar also shares its platform with two Volvos.
As previously reported, the Australian C40 Recharge models will be manufactured in China at Volvo’s Taizhou plant.
The C40 Recharge is the first Volvo without leather, with all C40s coming with synthetic options made from recycled and bio-based materials.
An example of this is Nordico, a Volvo-developed material made from recycled PET bottles, biomaterials from sustainable Scandinavian forests, and recycled wine corks.
The C40 Recharge’s cabin is largely carried over from the XC40 and includes the company’s latest Android-based infotainment system with Google Maps, Google Assistant, and an app store all preloaded.
In other markets, the C40 Recharge gets unlimited data for software updates over the air.
Local pricing and specifications of the C40 Recharge are yet to be confirmed and will be revealed closer to the launch date.
It’s unclear exactly what price the C40 Recharge will cost, but it’s expected to be slightly higher than the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric, in the tradition of coupe SUVs.
For reference, the 2023 Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric is priced at $72,990 before on-road costs, and the dual-engine version costs $79,990 before on-road costs.
