Donny van de Beek, Saul Niguez among the Premier League’s most benched players
With six months of the period 2021-22 Premier League As the season progresses and the clubs enjoy the “winter break” ersatz, amazingly, this is the right time to look back and evaluate.
While plenty of big-name players have lit up the league during the first half of the campaign, many others have had to be content to wait patiently on the sidelines for a rare chance to impress. Very patient.
Here’s a look at the fringe players at the “big six” clubs – Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, City of Manchester, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur – those who have struggled to assert themselves at the top this season, and who are perhaps hoping that the new year will open up a new opportunity to come on off the bench and take into their manager ‘s first team plan a little more regularly .
We reviewed the teams to determine the players who spent the most time on the matchday lineup but were limited to the roster this term as we approach week 24 of the season. solve (despite saying that Burnley who, having played 18 games, is still not halfway through the season).
First, using Transfermarkt data, we sorted every player from each individual club by the number of Premier League matchday teams they were included in this campaign. From those lists, we then filtered out the top 5 players with the most lineups combined with the lowest number of actual day participations for their team (calculated by starts, number of matches). substitute appearances and total minutes on the pitch).
There is, of course, a subjective factor to be considered, but each of the “big six” clubs with at least one big-name bench has failed to deliver any real impact. really, for a long time this season for one reason or another. . That said, some certainly have had more peripherals than others.

Biggest bench racer: Nicolas Pepe
Arsenal’s record signing certainly had his moments (he finished second in Arsenal’s Player of the Season poll last term) but he hasn’t been able to fully justify his huge transfer fee so far in this campaign. The inconsistent winger has made just five appearances and nine appearances overall despite being named in all but two of Mikel Arteta’s Premier League teams to date. The £72m man provided just one assist in the 2021-22 league season and is yet to open his scoring account after having played more than 500 minutes of football.

Biggest bench racer: Saul Niguez
It has to be said that Chelsea’s bench rate is generally quite good, with most players having quite a good time under Thomas Tuchel’s rotation system. However, one player in particular has fallen short of the coach’s confidence this season, with Saul’s surprise loan move looking more implausible than ever. Atlético Madrid The attack continued to be restless for most of the time on the sidelines at Stamford Bridge.
We are happy to welcome you @saulniguez to the club on a season-long loan! ️#HolaSaul 🇪🇸

Biggest bench racer: Ibrahima Konate
The wait continues for Liverpool’s £36m summer signing to fully make his mark at Anfield, with Konate selected in the matchday squad for every Premier League He was only on the bench more than half of the time. Indeed, the Frenchman has not been substituted in a league game since the campaign took place. However, at 22, time is certainly still on the promising central defender’s side, and he is a worthy addition to the Premier League if only for his hobby is posting anime gifs on social media.

As the oldest member of City’s senior squad and captain of the club since David Silva’s departure in 2020, Fernandinho continues to feature regularly in Pep Guardiola’s regular squads. which is not directly used as before. Indeed, the 36-year-old Brazilian has found his deployment limited during his ninth Premier League campaign, although he remains involved in first-team affairs as a player. Biggest bench racer: Donny van de Beek
It’s been another bad season for Van de Beek, who has amassed more than an hour of Premier League action in the middle of the 2021-22 campaign. This is less than a quarter of the total league minutes (511) he has accumulated over the whole of 2020-21 – in itself hardly a classic year for the Ha midfielder. Lan. Let’s not forget that the former Ajax star was nominated for the Ballon d’Or most recently in October 2019, since then he has made just four appearances for United. Poor Donny.

Biggest bench racer: Dele Alli
After falling dramatically during Jose Mourinho’s time as manager, Alli struggled to get back into the first team goal at Spurs, despite at least being able to feature in the starting XI of the game. The 25-year-old attacking midfielder has found his way into all but one of the picks in Spurs’ Premier League games so far this season, although he has only actually played 145 minutes in the league (spread) over three appearances) since Antonio Conte took charge. in November 2021.
