Dr. Mary Scollay | Jockey Club
The Equestrian Welfare and Integrity Unit (HIWU), established by Drug Free Sport International to administer the Safety and Drug Administration (HISA) Drug Control and Anti-Doping and Safety Program, has appointed Dr. Mary Scollay serves as chief scientific officer.
In this role, beginning October 10, Scollay will oversee HIWU’s Science Department, including the HISA Equine Analysis Laboratory accreditation program, and pre-launch education efforts. ADMC in January 2023. She will also prioritize research development into Prohibited Substances while interacting with veterinary scientists, pharmacists, and other Purebred industry experts. Additionally, Scollay and her team will manage a database of Prohibited Substances that will be available for use as a reference tool by industry stakeholders.
Scollay joins HIWU after serving as chief executive officer and chief executive officer of the Racing Medication & Testing Consortium (RMTC) for three years. During her time with the RMTC, she directed the improvement of world-class laboratory drug testing standards, promoting the rules and penalties recommended by the RMTC for banned substances and drugs. treatment, monitoring of emerging threats to race integrity and the health and welfare of racehorses, and administrative oversight of research projects and educational programs funded by the RMTC aid.
Prior to leading the RMTC, Scollay spent more than 30 years as a veterinarian on the racing governing body, including 11 years as medical director of the Kentucky Equestrian Commission.
“Dr. Scollay’s extensive experience in the areas of anti-doping regulation, testing standards and veterinary regulation in the Purebred industry will make her a key asset of HIWU,” said Ben Mosier, chief executive officer. HIWU said. “We are fortunate to retain her knowledge and skills as we prepare for the implementation of the ADMC Program on January 1, 2023.”
Appointed to HISA’s ADMC Standing Committee in May 2021, Scollay relinquished that responsibility to take up his position at HIWU.
“HISA represents the way forward for Purebred racing, the only way forward,” said Scollay. “I am grateful for the opportunity to continue serving the sport during this transition, and I am committed to working with HIWU to deliver the best equine anti-doping program in the industry.”
