Dune: Spice Wars Devs Launches More Lights On Upcoming Strategy Game
The revelation of Dune: Spice Wars was a surprise at The Game Awards 2021. The upcoming game reunites its longstanding (and newly related) sci-fi ethos with the genre it helped popularize: 4x strategy. Fans have been patiently waiting for more details about the game and getting their wish fulfilled thanks to the Game Developer FAQ Steam page.
Developer Shiro Games has answered some common questions about the title. It clarifies that Spice Wars is a combination of 4x and real-time strategy elements including base building, among other things. The game has been developed from the ground up, which means it won’t have any elements from Shiro’s previous strategy game, Northgard. Maps will also be procedurally generated and feature a variety of unique features that players can tinker with.
Shiro Games previously announced two playable factions: House Harkonnen and House Atreides. It plans to have two more factions at launch and a 5th house during Early Access. Shiro wants to stick to the book series first, stating that houses that have appeared in the previous Dune games but not in the original material, such as House Ordos, are not guaranteed to return in the Spice Wars .
Other perks include confirmed multiplayer, and there are plans to add a campaign at some point in Early Access. Shiro is also open to the idea of adding mod support depending on how demanding it is.
Dune: Spice Wars is expected to launch on PC Early Access sometime this year, but Shiro will keep an eye on other platforms after launch, so a final console release isn’t ruled out.
