Since then Arceus created the world in its own image, Pokémon Fans have struggled with a huge choice for every major game: which version to buy. That predicament will remain for the latest games, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, with more unique features than usual, some even related to the distant past or the distant future. We’re breaking down every difference between the two versions to help you figure out which one to choose.

Each generation of Nintendo’s monster-hunting RPG has split a handful of Pokémon on its roster, with a few appearing in a game in the absence of a partner (and vice versa). This strategy makes sense to a certain extent, if a little skeptically. Offering some Pokémon in one version and not the other is sure to cause some people to buy two copies of the same game. Or, less cynically, it forces players to actually interact with each other and trade. But in scarlet & VioletThere are many other core differences that might influence your decision, including whether you want things that are prehistorically themed or perhaps decorated with a distant future.

Koraidon (“ride-on,” geddit?) will be the motorcycle-inspired dragon beast that comes with scarlet. Like its counterpart Poké Miraidon, it has been described as having “powers far beyond other Pokémon”, but Nintendo has deliberately kept both of them a mystery.

Koraidon is, as you might imagine, a mostly red monster, sporting what unquestionably look like a pair of wheels. Wheels it…doesn’t use. Instead, Koraidon gallops on its legs, which raises so many evolutionary questions. It has a feathery appearance, a bit like a prehistoric bird. Rideable, this Legendary can also fly and swim, making it quite the means of transport as you explore Scarlet’s open world.

Miraidon is Violet’s far more futuristic Legendary, and as you’d expect, it’s predominantly purple. Like Koraidon, it can take three different forms (formes?), using Drive Mode, Aquatic Mode, and Glide Mode. It too has a vehicular style, also sporting (albeit more subtle) vestigial wheels. Seeming like the lovechild of Pokémon and a Transformer, it has a metallic sheen, and a pixel display for eyes.

Quite where either Legendary will appear in the game is unclear, given we’ll now be able to tackle the game’s gyms in any order—perhaps they’ll simply trigger once you’ve done whichever proves to be your eighth. Or maybe we’ll get lucky, and they’ll be introduced earlier to make movement around the large game easier.

Pokémon Scarlet Pokémon Exclusives

  • Larvitar, a rock-ground-type lizard creature who first debuted in Pokémon Gold and Silver.
  • Pupitar, the second-stage evolution of Larvitar. It floats for some reason. Though Pupitar hasn’t been officially confirmed, we’re including it since it evolves from a confirmed Pokémon. (One caveat though: In Pokémon Sword and Shield, Slowpoke, who has been part of the series since the days of Red and Blue, could not evolve unless you choose an expansion.)
  • despot, the final stage in Larvitar’s evolution. Unlike the previous two evolutions, Tyrannitar removed the earth-type association and was of the dark rock type.
  • reportera kind of magnetic stone Pokémon Sword and Shield I guess who, supposedly a play about the famous Stonehenge monument in England.
  • weapona fire/psychic type, brand new to Gen 9, with the appearance of a knight.
  • Koraidon, scarletLegendary Pokémon and cover model.

  • Bagona dragon-type Pokémon that debuted on Ruby Pokémon and Jade
  • Garret, the second stage evolution of Bagon. The same logic that applies to Larvitar’s evolutionary chain also applies to Bagon.
  • salamander, a flying dragon-type Pokémon and the final stage in Bagon’s evolution. Some people (guilty to be accused) believe that Salamence is the greatest Pokémon of all time.
  • rescueIce-type penguin Pokémon whose face is a giant block of ice.
  • ceruledge, is not a relative of Honege, but a brand new bipedal Pokémon with two types, fire and ghost. With the blade for the arm, it’s a fearsome futuristic counterpoint to scarletmore medieval Armarouge.
  • Miraidon, VioletLegendary Pokémon and cover model.

Two new Professors.

Pokémon Scarlet exclusive professor

Because scarlet player, you will be guided by Professor Sada about your time in Paldea. Due to the influence of Spanish on Paldea, it is no coincidence that the Spanish word for “past” is “pasada”—in other translations, her name varies among other words for “past” past” and “ancient,” while the original Japanese is Olim, Latin for “once upon a time.”

Sada, like her partner, Professor Turo, is involved in the research of Pokémon Terastal and the phenomenon of Terastallisation. She also dresses up as a scientist from Fire Stone.

Meanwhile, Violet The player will be accompanied by a delicious smoothie, Professor Turo. Again, the Spanish for “future” is “futuro” and his name in the Japanese version is Futu, which seems to be derived from the Latin word for “future”, “future.”

While Sada wears a caveman woman’s garb, Turo wears a space-age bodysuit underneath a lab coat. He is also researching the crystalline nature of Pokémon Terastal. Hmmmm, maybe time travel also enters this story in some way?

Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Exclusive outfits

When you pose in the world of Pokémon Scarlet or Violet, you will discover that your character’s clothing is determined by the version you purchased. If you get scarletyou will wear orange, but if you pick up Violet you will be decorated in purple. Both are uniforms of the school you will attend.

However, you can change your outfit in the game when you find a shop to buy new clothes.

Two icons of the academy.

Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Exclusive School

Even the school you will attend is determined by the version you purchase. Your school, where you are taught about Pokémon, is located in Paldea’s largest town, Mesagoza. However, if you get scarlet it will have a different name, logo and color scheme than if you had one Violet.

In scarlet, The school is called Naranja Academy, with an orange emblem with orange spokes on its shield. (Of course, Naranja is Spanish for Orange.)

In Violet, you’ll instead go to Uva Academy, where the purple icon is, there are some grapes on display. (And yes, Uva is Grape in Spanish.)

Interestingly, both academies are run by the same person—Clavell—but he will be orange or purple depending on the version.

And why orange and not red? Well, that’s Nintendo.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is set to reimagine other longstanding aspects of the series. Set in an area called Paldea, inspired by IRL Iberian Peninsula, these games feature a fully open world for the first time in the series’ history. There are four co-op players. The gym is backespecially with a leader made many fans confused about sex. And in lieu of controversial silly features like “Super Evolve,” some Pokémon are capable of doing something called—by the way, this is a very practical word—“teristallizing,” which means they envelop yourself in crystals and can change their type quickly.

Update: 11/18/2022, 11:15 a.m. ET: Good, scarlet and Violet are now above us. If you’re venturing into the Paldea region, we wish you happy hunting. If you are still wondering which version to buy or whether you want to join the latest version Pokémon adventure, you should know that, although the fundamentals of the game may sound more than it sounds, Nintendo’s five-year-old hybrid console definitely seems to be struggling with the game on a technical level.
