Ellerbe & Hearn Trade Trash Trash Talk Over Canelo – Golovkin II Pay-per-view Numbers

Via Dan Ambrose: Mayweather Promotions CEOs Leonard Ellerbe and Eddie Hearn went back and forth on social media today about the pay-per-view numbers for last weekend’s three-movie bout between Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin.

Ellerbe was slightly gloated after industry insider Dan Rafael reported that the fight between Canelo and Golovkin III brought in between 550,000 and 575,000 buys on the DAZN PPV.

According to Rafael, those numbers are “disappointing” and he doubts they will cover the $75 million paid to Canelo (58-2-2, 39 KOs) and Golovkin (42-2- 1.37 KOs) for their title last Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

DAZN reports that the total purchase rate is 1.06 million purchases for the Canelo-Golovkin III war. However, Rafael says those are global numbers and not for the US, which charges their pay-per-view higher than other countries.

DAZN has not yet reported total revenue from the fight between Canelo and Golovkin III. That would clear up a lot of things if they revealed it to the public because it would shed some light on whether the purchase included $75 million in wallets for Canelo and Golovkin.

If the PPV numbers don’t balance out the cost of the massive wallets for Canelo and Golovkin, it’s not clear what DAZN will seek to prove by reporting the event has attracted 1.06 million purchases.

It’s a bad idea to let Canelo and Golovkin fight at this point in their careers because there’s not much interest in the fight left. Golovkin has taken a toll on his caretaker choosing to face non-elite boxers over the past four years, and fans have forgotten about him.

“Janibek [Alimkhanuly] or [Yamaguchi] Falcão, the Brazilian guy we promote,” said Top Rating Bob Arum Fighthype when asked who Gennadiy Golovkin will face next after losing to Canelo Alvarez last Saturday.

“I mean, those battles are easy to do and they’re winnable battles for GGG, but they’re not for him, it’s not his fault, he’s about to strike a deal. the deal that I think he made in his last game $30 million dollars. No one would pay him anything like that to fight one of those guys,” Arum said of Golovkin.
