England won their first major women’s championship in a dramatic way, beating Germany 2-1 after extra time in the Euro 2022 final.
The victory was witnessed by 87,192 spectators at Wembley Stadium, a European Championship final attendance record, men’s or women’s.
England’s Ella Toone opened the scoring midway through the second half with a deft tackle, before Lina Magull’s equalizer sent the game into extra time.
10 minutes, from the penalty kick, Chloe Kelly cushioned the ball from close range to open the scoring, avenging the 6-2 defeat to Germany in the 2009 final in Finland.
