Ethan Crumbley, Accused Michigan Oxford High School Shooter, Will Plead Insanity

Ethan Crumbley, the high school sophomore accused of carrying out the deadliest mass shooting ever this year, will pursue the insane defense to accuse him of killing 4 students and injured seven others in Michigan, according to court filings Thursday.

The 15-year-old Oxford High School student previously pleaded not guilty to charges including one count of terrorism, four counts of first-degree murder, seven counts of assault with intent to kill and 12 counts own a gun.

“Please note that … Ethan Crumbley intended to assert defense of insanity at the time of the alleged crime,” his attorneys Paula Loftin and Amy Hopp wrote in brief court filings. Oakland County Courthouse, follow Detroit Free Press.

Crumbley will need a psychiatric evaluation for the plea to be upheld, and Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald has argued that Crumbley’s mental state would not affect whether he can be charged.

During an investigation last month, Lieutenant Tim Willis of the Oakland County Sheriff told a judge that investigators found a pair of cell phone videos that Crumbley had made the night before He entered the school bathroom with a backpack and fired a shotgun.

In the videos, Crumbley discussed his plan to kill his classmate the next day, authorities said, adding that he appeared to have written in a diary found in his backpack “detailing desire to bombard schools, including killing students.”

“This is not even a close call,” McDonald said at that time. “This is completely pre-calculated.”

Using a gun purchased just four days earlier as a gift from his father, Crumbley allegedly fired more than 30 rounds during a riot that lasted about five minutes before surrendering to police.

During a January 7 hearing for Crumbley’s parents, who were facing their own charges for feeding their son a gun obsession, prosecutors said that James and Jennifer Crumbley ignored their obvious warnings about their son, painting him as a troubled and depressed teenager.

Crumbley texted many times Prosecutors said last spring his mother told him about “a demon or a ghost or someone else in the house” and a few months later took video of himself torturing animals. Crumbley’s parents are facing involuntary manslaughter charges.
