Why you should adopt a rescue dog: Everything you need to know from ISWMP

Introduce yourself to the audience of The Skinny Confidential.

Alexandra Schiffer: Hi, I’m Aleksandra Schiffer, Founder and President of ISWMP. I am a refugee from Serbia, during a decade of long civil war. I have had the opportunity to live and thrive in a number of different countries, which have exposed me to many different diversity, cultures and communities. And I came to the United States fifteen years ago, from France. Since I was a child, I have been attracted to animals of all shapes and sizes. Throughout my life, I have worked & volunteered to help & protect animal rights.

Why did you start I Stand With My Pack?

EQUAL: I started ISWMP because I wanted to strengthen the relationship between humans and animals and to be a voice for animals because they are not. From my life experience, I have witnessed firsthand how terrible the war humans can be against other species and each other. I want to do something about it.

I started with the animals on the street, brought them home, provided vet care, and ultimately kept it all. In fact, I’ve even been in situations where I was protecting them from people trying to harm them. I have volunteered with other organizations, donated financially, and when I saw the cracks in ongoing rescue & shelter efforts that was when I founded ISWMP. Through the work I’ve done, I’ve created my own team of nurturers, donors, and volunteers to make it possible for ISWMP to do more.

What situations are you facing right now when it comes to animal rescues?

EQUAL:The worst thing. We see a high medical need for animals due to abuse, neglect, backyard breeders, car crashes, hoarders, animal return, fighting dog rings, litter of dogs The pups are abandoned without a mother and the owner is incapable of basic vet care.

What is the difference between buying a dog and getting a rescue dog?

EQUAL: Buying a dog and rescuing one are two completely different things. Buying a dog is just continuing the vicious cycle of breeding. The majority of the dogs we rescue are acquired from backyard breeders. These individuals don’t do any basic requirement, like vaccination, injection/impregnation, feeding them, resulting in malnutrition and all kinds of other medical problems. Often, bitches are bred several times and then dumped at shelters or much worse.

Now rescuing a dog means helping first and foremost as that dog may not have had a happy and healthy life before. Second help the rescue community to continue to do the work. Third, it feeds your soul, thereby helping that individual become a better person.

My goal is the ripple effect of rescuing animals, holding them captive, teaching unconditional love, then repeating itself. My intention in doing this is to continue to bring animals and people together to literally save each other. Our rescue is the ship.

Why should you adopt a rescue dog?

Why do you think people mistreat animals?

EQUAL: Hurting people hurts others. Humans are not born to hate, hurt or harm others. What I see is a lack of education, & these are all learned behaviors and we are failing them by not helping them get better. It’s a vicious cycle & until people want to stop & break the cycle, we will continue to work to help them help themselves. We live in a disposable society and close our eyes to what is in front of us, because we are exposed to so much it becomes the norm & accepted after that.

If someone wants to help, what are some actions they can take to prevent this?

EQUAL: Volunteer at your local shelters, rescue, join social media groups. Organize fundraisers for your favorite charities, support animal welfare candidates, educate yourself about your county’s system and how it handles animal welfare . You’re the one to change & that means it takes effort. If you see or hear animals being abused, report them.

How can you tell if an animal is being abused and who do we warn?

EQUAL: There are many different ways to visualize it: hair loss with severe rash, bites, scrapes, deep wounds, fractures, rib malnutrition (possibly a disease), large abscesses. Notify your local authority or local shelter as soon as you can.

Some people are afraid to accept a rescue because they have babies or children. How can you ease the mind of someone on the fence?

EQUAL: Do your homework on the rescue, their efforts to rehabilitate animals. We take our animals to trainers to make sure they find the right home. Meaning they are not aggressive food, like or dislike children, or other dogs, guarding resources (one owner’s possession, toys, etc.).

We have more puppies than most other groups of animals of the same age. It really depends on the individual doing the research, working with the rescue and knowing what your limitations are. Understand the type of dog you need and the type of dog you want. Most importantly, remember that you are adopting a dog and a dog is going to be a dog.

Tell us about a recent case and how we can help as a community.

EQUAL: All of our dogs are unique and each requires equal care and devotion. We’re going to pick out a really unique and special guy named Willie. We rescued Willie about two months ago. He was just four months old and had gone completely blind from juvenile glaucoma.

If he had been treated in time he would have been fine, and without treatment the disease progressed rapidly and he lost one of his eyeballs. Then the other became extremely infected and had to be removed immediately. Willie was in great pain and despite everything was a boy ALWAYS happy. He was hospitalized for ten days and had to have his second eyeball removed. His foster caretaker received him with enthusiasm and lots of love. Willie thrived and made a full recovery. He has become an inspiration to many and the perfect example of what happens when an animal receives love, care and safety. Willie was adopted and is now the King of a ranch with his very own companion dog Carson!
