Ex-Pakistan PM Imran Khan booked under anti-terror law, faces likely arrest

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister of Pakistan overthrown Imran Khan faces the possibility of arrest after he targeted the country’s institutions, including the police and the judiciary, while speaking at a recent public rally.
Pakistani police on Sunday registered a FIR against Khan under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) for allegedly threatening an additional session of judges and senior officers of the Islamabad Police.
FIR has been registered under the complaint filed by judge Ali Javed at Margalla police station of Islamabad under Section 7 of ATA.
Large forces of security personnel have been deployed near the PTI Khan’s residence in Islamabad’s Banigala locality, and roads leading to his house have been blocked off. Party workers have gathered in large numbers in the area and precautions are being taken to prevent any escalation of the situation.
Pakistani media have reported that Imran may also be under house arrest, and law enforcement agencies are said to be awaiting instructions from his superiors. The Home Office is said to have obtained written permission from the Prime Minister’s Office for the arrest of the head of PTI.
Imran is said to have contacted his party leaders by phone to decide what action to take in the event of his arrest.
Pakistan’s media watchdog issued a ban on broadcasting Khan’s live speeches on television channels following his speech at a rally in Islamabad.
Khan, while speaking before a public meeting on Saturday, threatened to file lawsuits against top police officials, a female judge, Pakistan’s Election Commission and main opponents. handling officer met with his arrested assistant, Shahbaz Gill.
Gill was arrested on August 9, after registering a lawsuit against him for his controversial comments to a private television channel. Imran and other PTI leaders have alleged that he was tortured while in custody.
