The skis and snowmobiles in our area were flying off the shelves and, since we hadn’t had any snow in the last two years in Charlotte, I quickly realized that we weren’t prepared for playtime in the snow either. .
Chase had Friday off for a teacher’s day and so I took all three boys with me to a local consignment store early in the morning and put on a pair of pants and gloves. snow for Chase. Thankfully, Chase’s handshakes from previous snowy winters worked for Ryder and Rhett!
When we got home, I turned my attention to submitting our cabinet color preferences to our cabinet builder and company. Now they will make small samples so we can confirm that we match the colors and then things will progress from there.
These are the colors we chose:
- Mud locker + Drop area: Port Sherwin-Williams Grays
- Kitchen: Benjamin Moore Vale Mist
- Integrated Kitchen, Built-in Office, Integrated Play Loft: Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee
- Laundry, Chase’s Bathroom Vanity: Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter
All other cabinets (including the kitchen island, vanity in the bathroom and living room) will be colored wood.
My main goal for most rooms in the house is to create a warm, bright, comfortable space, but I’m especially fond of a moody room! I thought it would be a fun space with a little more depth and darker colors. (We’re keeping the cabinets mostly neutral and plan to add color and dimension to the space with wallpaper, trim and paint.) Oh and right now the plan is in our pantry. We are having an exposed brick backsplash in combination with the pale green Vale Mist cupboard. I can’t wait to see it all come together!
And that’s enough talk for the day!
Saturday
It was a chilly Saturday and we tried our best to get out and play at a local park, but it was very windy and our party didn’t stay too long.

The boys lit up when we suggested a family trip to Lowe’s to take a look at some issues and wrap up. We were three to three kids who thought driving a tractor at Lowe’s was the equivalent of an amusement park.
By the time we got home, everyone was ready for lunch. Then the older kids and I made a birthday cake for Ryan’s dad while Ryan prepared some beef stew for dinner.
Chase and Ryder are fun campers when I say they can lick bowls of pie dough!
Finally, we brought Rhett and Ryder down for a nap, and while our two youngest guys were asleep, I read Harry Potter with Chase while Ryan sorted out our garage. We realized our garage was in dire need of reorganization last week when we both tried to exercise at the same time one morning and it got a little messy. Hopefully we’re good to go now!
Ryan eventually got Chase to fish for about an hour while I walked straight around the house. Saturday is the first day in a long time I can remember not turning on the computer to work during the boys nap time and it feels so good, even after I’ve finished cleaning nap. Ha!
Ryan and Chase got home as soon as Rhett and Ryder woke up and we were then joined by my father-in-law, who was at the birthday party!
We are so grateful he lives near now so we can celebrate this special day with him!
Greg stayed for a few hours until we called it a night and dived into the whole bedtime routine!
Sunday
We went to bed on a Saturday night, crossed our fingers through the snow, and woke up to a winter wonderland!
The boys wanted to skip breakfast and head straight into the snow, but we ended up getting waffles in everyone’s bellies (and coffee in Mom’s!) and realized we had enough energy to tackle everything. their snowman. About a million hours later (real-time estimate), we have three kids walking in snow pants, coats, hats, gloves, and boots.

It was Rhett’s first time seeing snow and he didn’t know what to do with it. He wants me to put him down and pick him up and put him down and cry and give him a pacifier and eat the snow and play with the snow and cry. Suffice it to say he didn’t last as long as his big brothers out there!
We ended up with Rhett clearly getting through it, but we also needed a bit of a break to swap out Chase’s boots.
Chase’s dressing shoes made us all laugh because we couldn’t find any “real” snowshoes for him at the local stores on Friday because the snow was clearly creeping in. everyone in the Charlotte area. Chase started with a pair of red rain boots with layered socks (which failed miserably) before moving on to my snowshoes. My boots work great because they are lace-up and can be tightened. Thanks God! (And yes, we have legal snowshoes on order for Chase right now, coming soon.)
Once Chase had a better pair of shoes on his feet, Ryan took the kids up the big hill in our neighborhood while I turned back to Rhett, who was thrilled to be back indoors.

Their skiing adventure lasted just over an hour and everyone was finally home ready for a hot lunch! I make grilled cheese for the family, and Ryan and I eat sandwiches with leftover beef stew from Saturday night.
A perfect snow day meal!
The rest of our Sunday passed in a blur of two snowy day games, hot showers, pizza for dinner and movie night!
Both boys were absent from school today in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and then the rest of the week will look relatively normal here. At the front of the house, we had a brick picking meeting (oh my god, talk about decision overload!) and another meeting with an electrician.
