Fix the Bad Rebecca and Keeley Storylines!
Keeley (Juno Temple) and Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) used to be my favorite character on Ted Lasso. The two aren’t just unique, brilliant, larger-than-life ladies with a distinct sense of humor and passion for their careers – they’re friends. And good friends, there! They are interested in each other’s lives beyond the boy drama. Rebecca encourages Keeley to develop her career, while Keeley breaks Rebecca out of her shell. In a sea of testosterone and sweaty footballers, Keeley and Rebecca continually prove that feminine images can survive — and thrive — in the Premier League.
Fortunately, in Season 3 of Ted Lasso, nothing has changed about Rebecca and Keeley’s friendship. They are still constantly checking in on each other — as in this most recent episode, “The Strings That Bind Us,” in which the pair go out for cocktails. No one can deny their commitment to each other as companions. But they’ve run out of things to talk about beyond their love lives, a sign of weak writing for these strong female characters.
Both Rebecca and Keeley drowned because of their romantic entanglements — Rebecca, more properly, after falling off a bridge in last week episode and is saved by a handsome Dutchman – this leads to them drought appearing on the football field. Ted stopped visiting Rebecca’s office to give her presents those butter cookies. Keeley never burst into a sweaty, greasy dressing room to direct a group of footballers into a PR stunt, as she once did. The pair have been isolated from the rest of the story, cornered in their dating drama as opposed to any major plot.
In previous episodes of Season 3, Rebecca was more interested in the Richmond AFC—especially whether Ted was a qualified coach for the team. She confronts Zava (Maximilian Osinsky) and convinces him to join Richmond, although Zava seems to have completely disappeared from the plot—along with Rebecca’s desire to become the boss of Richmond AFC. By episode 7, Rebecca seemed to have lost interest in the team due to a one-night stand with the Dutch. I fear this will become her central arc now—a romance, like last season—as her growing commitment to the team has turned into an inspirational one. much more.
At least Rebecca spent some time with the team this season, a privilege Ted Lasso completely stripped away from poor Keeley Jones. After breaking up with Roy (Brett Goldstein) during the season premiere, Keeley spent most of her time wearing the ugliest outfits known to man (seriously, they rivaled the swag) together). Emily in Paris) while arguing with some of her colleagues at a PR firm. A spin-off of the PR firm Keeley Jones doesn’t sound too bad—except for the fact that her colleagues are all the most boring, boring people in the world. Essentially, we’re just watching Keeley stomp around in Barbie pink knee-highs while her moody co-workers stoop over their desks like wilted trees.
Keeley’s new love affair, a woman named Jack (Jodi Balfour), who happens to be her boss, invigorates me—at first. But Jack’s main personality trait has been revealed, and it leaves one thing to look forward to: She’s rich. She loves to shower Keeley with gifts. That doesn’t seem to go wrong until Keely chats with Rebecca, who warns her that her ex-husband Rupert (Anthony Head) used to do the same thing.
The fall of these two characters could be forgiven if it weren’t for most of the female characters in Ted Lasso only half as active as Roy, Jamie (Phil Dunster), Nate (Nick Mohammed) and even Trent Crimm (James Lance). The only woman who feels genuine and energized this season is Rebecca’s best friend Sassy (Ellie Taylor), who tells Ted (Jason Sudeikis) he’s a mess. That’s what every woman should tell Ted Lassoseries, at this point, too.
In Season 1, I applaud the series for taking the time to portray the nuances of divorce, when Ted’s wife Michelle (Andrea Andres) splits with the mustached idiot. Michelle was never the villain; She has good reason to divorce the sweet guy. We all love Ted, but we feel the same for Michelle, who isn’t emotionally connected with silly jokes and overbearing kindness. Now, in Season 3, Michelle has become a much more villainous character, as she dates the couple’s therapist following her marriage to Ted.
Nate has a great part in this episode that involves the girl he has a crush on, a hostess at a Greek restaurant in town. Between this and his close relationship with Ted, he now has two powerful storylines going on at once. He wasn’t sure if he should ask her out, so he asked his family, who explained why he should by showing him the legendary scrapbook. about his parents’ romance. The relics tell the story of how hard it was for Nate’s parents to finally be together, proof that asking a girl out isn’t the hardest task in the world.
But here’s the problem: Nate was so weird with this hostess. The first time he came, she refused to book a table for him because the restaurant was already booked; Nate replied, “Do you even know who I am?” Nate has been nothing but awkward with her ever since. In this episode, he starts asking her out twice, but both times he runs away. When he finally invites her to dinner, she says yes – but why? What woman would say yes to an egotistical weirdo who is clearly stalking her? She didn’t see all the sweet things happening behind the scenes.
It is for these reasons that I beg Ted Lasso to overcome its problems with women. The men have such compelling storylines in this episode — Sam (Toheeb Jimoh) makes a big political statement, Jamie almost rips his genitals off — but the women are making me very angry.
Near the end of the episode, when Keeley begs his girlfriend to stop buying her stuff (again, why?), she’s wearing the scariest hat I’ve ever seen. The monster is pink, translucent, about 1 foot tall and looks like a Puffle from Club Penguin. No woman on earth wears this unless it’s part of a costume. It was a shocking, literal reminder that Ted Lasso has lost control over his women who deserve the world.
