Florida International Panthers Hire Mike MacIntyre As Soccer Coach

Florida International Football has hired Memphis defensive coordinator Mike MacIntyre as its coach, the school announced on Thursday.

MacIntyre, a former Colorado and San Jose State coach, appeared Wednesday in the FIU’s search, as ESPN first reported, and a deal was finalized early Thursday. He replaces Butch Davis, who won 24-32 at the Florida International and 1-11 this season.

A MacIntyre hiring announcement is expected late Thursday. MacIntyre, 56, won the national coach of the year title in 2016, when he led Colorado to the South Division championship and the Pac-12 championship match. He was fired in 2018 after five consecutive seasons.

MacIntyre won 16-21 at San Jose State, where he guided to 10 wins and finished 21st in 2012. He was born in Miami, where his father, George, a longtime college coach, scout for the University of Miami.

The FIU recently hired Scott Carr from UCF as its new athletic director, replacing longtime AD Pete Garcia. Sources say the school is also specifically looking at Florida A&M coach Willie Simmons and North Carolina specials team coordinator/outside linebacker coach Jovan Dewitt for the job. Other candidates include UCF co-attack coordinator Tim Harris and Appalachian state offensive coordinator Frank Ponce.
