Former Australian cricket icon Andrew Symonds dies at the age of 46

Queensland Police say they are investigating a fatal car crash in the Hervey Ranges, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Townsville. The emergency services involved in the crash attempted to revive Symonds, but he died from his injuries.

Initial information said the crash happened shortly after 11pm on Saturday.

Symonds played 26 test matches for Australia as an all-round hitter between 2004 and 2008, as well as 198 one-day internationals and 14 Twenty20 internationals.

“The club are shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of former foreign star and cult hero, Andrew Symonds,” the star’s former club, Kent Cricket, said on Twitter.

“The thoughts of everyone at Kent Cricket are with Roy’s family and friends at this desperate time of grief.”

Symonds won two more than 50 World Cups with Australia in 2003 and 2007 and was part of the Ashes’ 2006-07 win over England.

In total, he played 17 seasons for Queensland in the Australian domestic league and also represented Kent, Gloucestershire, Lancashire and Surrey in UK county cricket.

Symonds played 26 test games and 198 internationals in a single day for Australia in a career that spanned more than 11 years.

After retiring in 2012, Symonds worked as a television commentator for Fox Sports.

Symonds is the third Australian cricket icon to die this year after Shane Warne and Rod Marsh.
