France’s record business grew 8.2% to €364m in H1, but growth slowed in the world’s fifth largest music market


Music sales recorded in H1 belong to France, the world’s fifth largest music market.

According to a new dataset published by the country’s industrial body SNEP, France generated recorded music sales as 364 million euros in the first half of 2022, with an 8.2% YoY growth of the market.

Total revenue from streaming (including premium, ad-supported and video streams) grew 14%, or 36 million euros YoY in the first half of 2022, from 246 million euros in the first half of last year.

Revenue from subscription-based, paid streams grew 12.8% YoY to €211.5 million and accounted for 58% of total revenue, compared with 56% in the first half of 2021.

Meanwhile, ad-supported streams generated revenue of 28.1 million euros in the first half of 2022, a 10% increase, or 2.7 million euros, compared to the first half of 2021.




Elsewhere in the market, SNEP noted in its report that it has seen a significant increase in revenue from video streaming, up 37.6% year-over-year.

For the first time ever, revenue from video streaming accounted for 10% of total market revenue.


Meanwhile, physical sales in France, which account for 22% of the recorded music market, fell 8.7%, from 90.4 million euros in the first half of 2021, to 82.5 million euros in the first six months of this year.

Despite this drop in physical music sales, SNEP reports that vinyl sales are up 15% year-over-year.



France’s first six months results follow a year (2021) in which the world’s fifth-largest music market saw its recordings Top 1 billion dollars (861 million euros), growing 14.3% YoY and marking the market’s fifth consecutive year-on-year increase.
