From Primary Wave’s $2bn deal to the 100,000 tracks uploaded to streaming services each day… it’s MBW’s Weekly Round-Up

The portfolio buyback market started to heat up again this week with the news that financial giant Brookfield Asset Management has struck a $2 billion deal. Main wave Music to invest in music copyright.

As part of the deal, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, Brookfield would get substantial minority interest in the Primary Wave. Brookfield will also commit $1.7 billion to the fund to buy music rights.

For financial giants, Brookfield is a giant, with more than $750 billion in value managed property. The company’s deal with Primary Wave marks their first step into the music business.

Also this week, MBW reported that Universal Music GroupThe 10-year European ban on acquiring any property – or re-contracting any artist involved in their EMI-related divestment has expired.

On September 21, 2012, the European Commission officially announced that it had approved the acquisition of EMI Music by UMG, but with strict conditions.

In addition to being forced to divest, EC declaredThere is no uncertain term: “Universal [has] commit not to buy back assets or renew contracts with any artists who have signed with related units for a period of ten years”.

The EC said the 10-year ban would ensure that Universal’s EMI-related divestment would be “really permanent”. On September 21, 2022, that 10-year period expired.

Elsewhere, MBW reports that around 100,000 new tracks are now being uploaded to music streaming platforms every day. In addition, TikTok’s parent company is recruiting for A&R Director positions in four major North American cities, while Triller secured a $310 million investment ahead of its planned Q4 IPO.

Here’s what happened this week…

1) ACCURACY Waves $2 BILLION BUSINESS WITH HUGE FINANCIAL LEVEL TO HAVE MUSIC COPYRIGHT ON REQUIRED

Primary Wave has been a powerful player in the music business. It just has so much more power.

As first reported by the Wall Street Journal, Brookfield Asset Management has reached a $2 billion deal with Primary Wave Music to invest in music rights.

As part of the deal, Brookfield will get what the WSJ reports as a minority interest in the Main Wave.

Brookfield will also commit $1.7 billion to a fund to buy music rights – a huge sum for Primary Wave to manage.

Main Wave Chief Executive Larry Mestel told the Journal: “[This deal] which means there aren’t any good acquisitions that we can’t do in the music business. We are not limited by size or opportunity…”

2) HAPPY HAPPENED: 100,000 TICKETS NOW BEING UPLOADED TO DISCOVER SERVICES LIKE SPOTIFY EVERY DAY

It’s inevitable, but it’s no less eye-catching: around 100,000 new tracks are now being uploaded to music streaming platforms every day.

That’s according to two of the most influential figures in the modern music business: the CEO and Chairman of Universal Music Group, Sir Lucian Graingeplus outgoing CEO of Warner Music Group, Steve Cooper.

Speaking at the Music Matters conference in Singapore on September 27, Grainge said that 100,000 tracks are now being “added to music platforms every day”.

Steve Cooper, speaking at Goldman Sachs Communicopia event on September 12 said: “Today, on any day of the week, about 100,000 tracks are uploaded SoundCloud, Spotify, Apple, [and] Early.

“The complexity of being able to separate one person’s music from the 99,999 other tracks uploaded that day is incredibly complex. [and] extremely difficult…”

3) AFTER 10 LONG YEARS, THE WAYS ARE COMING SOON POPULAR MUSIC GROUP IN EUROPE.

Over the past decade, Universal Music Group, the world’s largest music rights publisher, has been barred by law from buying certain properties – and signing some superstars – in Europe and the UK. Great Britain.

It was a direct result of restrictions on UMG introduced by the European Commission (EC) in 2012, when the company led by Sir Lucian Grainge acquired the then world’s fourth-largest record company. is EMI Music for about $1.9 billion from Citibank…

4) STILL PROVIDED THAT TIKTOK IS NOT INTO THE RECORDED COMPANY?

5) TRILLER SECURES SECURES

Much of the global economy is in trouble and the major entertainment industries are in trouble: Witness the US movie Box Office, where monthly September sales are set to drop to their lowest for 25 years (outside the pandemic).

However, in the music industry, the big money keeps growing.

Last week, Concord confirmed that they purchased a catalog from Phil Collins and his Genesis members for more than a reported $300 million.

Meanwhile, TikTok’s controversial rival Triller has confirmed that it has secured a binding $310 million investment from GEM (Global Emerging Markets), an alternative investment group based in Luxembourg…
