Games that help keep my New Year’s resolutions

It’s time to put 2021 in the rearview mirror and look forward to the new year. For most of us, that means thinking about how to make 2022 a better year than last year with some New Year’s resolutions. Every year when this time comes back, I make big plans. And while I was determined to improve myself and start good habits with the best of intentions, I noticed they started to break down as the months went by. So this year, I bring in a small backup: video games.

It’s time to be healthy

Like many people, my first move every year is to get a little healthier after the past few weeks of drifting. While video games are a mostly sedentary hobby, there are a number of titles that can help make this goal a reality. First, I switched to Ring Fit Adventure. Sure, there are plenty of games that get you warmed up and moving, like the Just Dance or Beat Saber series, but there’s something about my movement that pushes the protagonist forward to save the world that really motivates. . However, I will not lie; I tried the game before and only got through the first area.

Sometimes I find it more helpful to get outside and exercise in the fresh air. So on those days when you’re jumping rope to fight dragons feeling a bit overwhelmed, I’ll go for a leisurely walk with my team of Pikmin in Pikmin Bloom. The result of a partnership between Niantic and Nintendo, Pikmin Bloom is an AR mobile game that functions essentially as a step tracker. Unlike other fitness apps, this one lets you grow and travel with a swarm of cute leaf creatures. Maybe it’s just the motivation I need to keep those regular walks a part of my routine.

Of course, being healthy isn’t just about exercising, that’s why I want to Soup to help me become a little better chef. This is not my first time using video games to improve my cooking skills. But with Soup Pot, a game about making dishes with fresh ingredients, I can actually learn how to make more nutritious meals. Trying to make recipes in a virtual kitchen at least minimizes the chance of things burning.

It is also important that you monitor your mental as well as physical health. For video game enthusiasts, almost any game can help in this particular category. If a headline relaxes you or brings a smile to your face, you’re doing yourself a favor. There are also games that, while a bit stressful, dive into what it means to struggle with mental health, like the upcoming game She dreams elsewhere, check for anxiety. The game isn’t officially announced for 2022, but hopefully, it’ll hit it in time to help with my goals for the year.

Spend more time with friends and family

It’s been hard to keep up with loved ones over the past few years. Aside from finding a new job and all the mundane routines getting in the way, the pandemic has done its best to make it difficult for me to visit in person. Talking face-to-face can be confusing in some cases, but staying in touch can be as easy as turning on a game platform. It’s no surprise that the popularity of social games has grown rapidly since 2020. It’s definitely a band that my friends and I have joined and hope to keep going into. year 2022.

Between us is one of the easiest games to get a large group of friends into for a virtual hangout night. It’s not complicated to learn, encourages chat and multiple people can play it at the same time. However, if a larger player count isn’t a concern, some other good games we’d love to play together include Fall Guys, Valheim, Sea of Thieves, and Phasmophobia. More recently, we were all able to stay in the same room together, and when that happened, also lots of fun party games to keep people happy.

Dying Light 2 Stays In Humans

Try new things

While I can and hope to give up my comfort zone in a number of different categories – like food, activities, careers, etc – I’m primarily interested in trying out different types of video games. new next year. Coincidentally, that also messed up everything in my career, so I had to cross two items off the list at once. Only one tons of new indies to get excited for next year, and some I didn’t get a chance to try in 2021. But there are also some big hits that I hope will broaden my horizons a little bit more.

One of the biggest things coming out is Dying Light 2: Stay human. Now, zombies aren’t usually my thing, but my co-editor, Brian Shea, seems pretty excited about the title. Parkour, selection, and memorable characters all seemed like good reasons for me to give this post-apocalyptic game a chance.

However, there are a lot of great games coming out next year. Hopefully I’ll have time to fully explore titles like Horizon Forbidden West, Elden Ring, and maybe even a Breath of the Wild sequel while still leaving some room for titles that don’t. I usually don’t choose.
