In most video games it is only expected that the protagonist will run around breaking vases and rummage through every locked chest in a never-ending chase for more loot. This has been a joke among gamers for as long as I can remember, and most of the time people in the game don’t comment on your extremely antisocial behavior. However, in God of War RagnarokNearly every character at one point or another has a choice comment to share about everything Kratos has stolen.

God of War RagnarokNow available on PS5 and PS4, It’s a very good game, blends heavy, eye-catching combat with a story that has always focused on the relationships between different characters. It sometimes does this during those big, epic moments when the characters are in physical or verbal conflict. Other times it’s through smaller, quieter cutscenes. But Ragnarok also likes to sprinkle in some character interactions during play and exploration, and a great example of this happens whenever Kratos goes down a side road to get some loot. Often when you do, characters other than you will react in humorous ways. (Don’t worry, I won’t spoil anything below.)

First, as I was exploring a part of Midgard with Atreus, I noticed a shiny chest, potentially filled with loot, lurking in a cave out of sight. So I stopped moving forward and found a path leading up a cliff that allowed me to cross and drop off previously inaccessible loot. When I opened the chest, Atreus excitedly asked, “How do you always find such things?” Man, I’ve played a lot of third person action adventure games, that’s how.

However, after that, the other characters did not react so positively. While exploring another realm and solving a puzzle that would allow my party to traverse large gaps, I noticed a treasure chest in the distance. So I did what anyone would do: I stopped solving puzzles and searched all over the place for ages. Finally, I was able to go back and solve another puzzle to gain access to the path that led me to the chest. A member of my team, who will remain anonymous to protect you all from nasty vandals, asked me what I was doing. They even asked if I was lost. Atreus said, “This is just what my father does.”

Kratos used both hands to rip open the large magic chest.

Going deeper into the quest, I was once again distracted by the loot, and the same character again expressed mild frustration with my detour. Atreus spoke up again, telling the group, “My dad really liked the loot.” It’s true, I really do! Another character in the game frankly berates Kratos for his obsession with loot and how he keeps going the wrong way to get jewels and mess.

But it’s not just Kratos whose name is called. While playing Atreus, I was invited into a safe place and right in front of me was some loot. Of course I asked Atreus to run over and pick it up. My guide through this invite-only section of the nine realms sarcastically replied, “That’s right, take everything that isn’t nailed down…” To be honest, this made me feel a bit embarrassed. I mean, I still rob some points afterwards and keep everything I find, but I feel a little bad about it. That’s something, isn’t it?

The interactions between the characters are rich throughout Ragnarok. Even better, once you beat the game, you can continue to play through the credits, and the developers have made sure to create a lot of new dialogue and interactions that only happen after the credits. All of this goes a long way towards getting me interested in these characters and there’s one more thing that I love. God of War Ragnarok. Well, that and all the looting!
