Going to the pharmacy for the sick

Derek and Jennifer

Modern-day prescriptions often include an “Rx.” This symbol may be derived from “recipe”, the Latin word for “take”, or the ancient Egyptian symbol of the Eye of Horus, which is associated with healing powers.

Pharmacists have played a vital role in the healing effort for centuries as they work with service providers and patients to ensure safe and effective treatments. In the health system, pharmacists can play a central role in guiding the safe and effective use of medicines and promoting patient care.

Recently, the Indiana Association of Health System Pharmacists recognized Derek Fields, PharmD, MBA, BCPS and Jennifer Reiter, PharmD, MBA, for their efforts in advancing the field while improving lives of the patient.

Derek Field

Fields is IU Health’s South Central Regional Executive for Clinical Operations and has received fellow status from the Indiana Association of Health System Pharmacists. This recognition is given to pharmacists who demonstrate “a commitment to excellence in hospital pharmacy practice.

“It’s certainly an award and personal recognition, but all of my accomplishments as a leader in pharmacy have been attributed to the amazing members of the pharmacy team that I’ve been working with,” says Fields. I am honored to lead. “Pharmacist and technician—It’s a partnership.”

Licensed in 2004, Fields became a pharmaceutical leader early in his career and has coached many pharmacists and technicians to be the best they can be.

“Fields are always trying to get the most out of everyone,” says Reiter. “He trusts you when you might not believe in yourself and helps put everyone in a position to succeed.”

Jennifer Reiter

Reiter knows the importance of supporting others as IU Health Southern Indiana’s Physician Emergency Care Pharmacy Director. She credits Fields for helping her develop her career during the ten years he was her boss.

As a leader, Reiter has helped design better methods of patient care and actively strives to improve healthcare and pharmaceuticals. Both areas of concern are directly related to IU Health’s goal of making Indiana a healthier state.

“You always have to be willing to be part of the change,” says Reiter. You don’t have to settle for the way things are. You have a role to play in improving healthcare and pharmaceutical services. You must participate.

These efforts and more are why Reiter was awarded the “Glen Sperandio Award for Excellence in Healthcare System Pharmacist Practice” for outstanding excellence in pharmacy practice in the United States. medical system.
