Goodbye Toxic Scented Candles (+ Simple Alternatives)

Ah, scented candles. I remember the days when I walked past a store full of them and poked my nose deep into these colorful objects. “This smells like vanilla! This is cake dough! Oh my gosh, cookie dough!! “I would linger in the synthetic fragrances and feel all cozy inside.

It’s funny how things change.

Today, I’m a little more in tune with my body and I can always tell when there’s a scented candle near me. How? I got a headache, almost immediately.

The truth is that many houses have scented candles lurking some where. And for some homes, that faint smell can always greet you as soon as you enter the house.

Yes, scented candles are quite popular. Think about it – how many times have you been given a candle? They make an easy gift! Candles have long been around as one of the easiest ways to mask unpleasant odors. People use them to create a relaxing vibe while soaking in a hot bubble bath or to bring a little romance to a meal. I know I got my well-deserved reward of scented candles as a gift (and still do to this day).

But are scented candles really that great?

The simple answer is no.

The unfortunate truth is that most of these scented candles contain a high amount of toxins. My body knows that. The headache came on almost immediately. That’s why you won’t find them in my house, and why I cringe every time I see a scented candle outside my house.

That is sad news. But the good news is that there are so many great options to give your home a distinctive scent without harming your body. Add to that in a bit.

First, let’s talk about the bad – starting with the wick.

Toxic candles

Although candle wicks are said to be made of cotton or paper, many studies have found that up to 30% of candles contain heavy metals in the wick to make the wick stiffer. These heavy metals include lead. Yes, lead. People are burning lead in their homes, in closed areas, around children and pets. And what annoys me the most is that these are not people trying to do anything bad. These are people who are trying as hard as they can to make their home a little more beautiful. The fact that candle companies are advertising these noxious products with their “air” (no pun intended) makes your home a cozy place, better yet. what makes you uncomfortable.

Its not cool, candle company. Not cool in the slightest.

Candles with lead wicks emit 5 times more lead than is considered dangerous for children. FIVE TIMES. Although lead wicks have been banned since 2003 there are still countless candles out there that are lit with lead wicks. (Um, WHY?)

Pretty scary isn’t it?

Sadly, the bad news about scented candles doesn’t stop there. Even if you have removed all the candles with the lead wick, these candles are still unsafe due to the wax being used.

Scented candles = More indoor air pollution

Scented candles are a huge source of indoor air pollution. They actually release a lot of dangerous chemicals. How dangerous? In some cases, as dangerous as secondhand smoke. That is due to the fact that most scented candles are made of paraffin wax. This paraffin wax releases many dangerous chemicals such as benzene and toluene. Just these two chemicals can damage the brain, lungs and central nervous system.

Let me break it down in a different way.

Have you ever smelled diesel fuel smoke and felt an immediate headache? (*Raise your hand*)

Well, the toxins released from paraffin candles are the same as those found in diesel fuel smoke. Add in artificial fragrances and dyes and you’re even adding more chemicals to the air when you light these candles. Some chemicals such as Acetone, Trichlorofluoromethane, Carbon Disulfide, 2-Butanone, Trichloroethene, Carbon Tetrachloride, Styrene, Xylene, Cresol, Cyclopentene.

Some of these toxins are found in things like varnish removers, paints, and lacquers. Tasty. Why haven’t they created a “varnish” scented candle yet? Maybe because people don’t want to smell that stuff?

Are those scented candles no longer fragrant?

What’s worse is that these candles can be found everywhere. Shops, houses, and even preschools! We are burning these super toxic and scary harsh chemicals everywhere and everywhere. They look harmless – but these little things create a lot of scary things. Like… a lot.

Again, this is not to embarrass the people using these candles. I don’t blame the user. I blame the supplier. It’s about education so we can make better choices for our families. When people buy these products, they think they are doing something to make their home better, but unfortunately, that does more harm than good.

Now I know what you’re feeling. Trust me. I was there too. I don’t want to give up my candles. I want to crawl back into my happiness hole without knowing the truth. I like candles. I love trying new scents. I like to add them to the hot tub at the end of the day. They are fun and easy and beautiful!

But I couldn’t hide the truth once I discovered it. I knew I had to get rid of my candles and never burn them again.
