Google Pixel Watch Review (2022): Better Late Than Never

I’m late. I so late. For a very important day. It’s effective Google Pixel Watch Mantra. Apple has been honing its smartwatches to become good oil machine over the past seven years, and Google was late. Late fashion.

For a first generation watch to be a bit rough around its edges is normal. More disappointing is that after years of development, the Pixel Watch has failed to resonate in the smartwatch market, rather than pass by, like a pebble on water. The user experience manages to live up to expectations, though it has a sharp enough aesthetic to leave an impression.

The Pixel Watch is one of the most comfortable smartwatches I’ve worn. Currently, with Apple Watch on my other wrist I can feel the Series 8 pressed against my skin. However, the Pixel Watch blends more seamlessly with my large wrist, making it easy for me to forget it’s there. There is only one size — 41 mm — and my 5’1″ partner also finds it comfortable on her smaller wrist (Google includes a larger strap size in the box if you need it).

You can choose between a Wi-Fi-only model ($349) and a model with extra cellular connectivity ($399). I should point out that the Pixel Watch, unlike other Wear OS smartwatches, does not work with iPhone. It is only available for Android phones.

In my eyes, Google’s watch is the best-looking full-featured smartwatch I’ve tried. I think a circle is better than a square. From the way my finger slides across the domed glass to the way the material catches light — Pixel Watches are beautiful to look at, aided by some of the fascinating (and customizable) watch faces that Google created.

However, the design is not without flaws. The top button located above the crown can be a bit difficult to press as it is located on the bottom half of the case. You will need to dig your fingers a little deeper. The AMOLED display, which is colorful and bright enough, is also cramped when you’re scrolling through emails or long messages. It might help if Google shrinks the bezels around the watch, but it would also be nice to have a larger size for those who want it.

Not available IP rating for water and dust resistance, but the Pixel Watch is rated at 5 ATM, which means it can survive depths of up to 50 meters, just like the Apple Watch. I will still avoid getting it wet if possible. The case is stainless steel, which is more durable than the aluminum found on most watches, but the screen protector is more of a concern. Dome glass is not exactly durable. I kept worrying that a bump against the wall would scratch it. Google built this glass protection from Gorilla Glass 5, which is more impact resistant than sapphire crystal but not as scratch resistant. I haven’t seen any scraps yet, but it might just be a matter of time before they start showing up.
