Green Bay Packers, Jaire Alexander completes 4-year renewal, $84 million

GREEN BAY, Wis. – It was never a question of if Green Bay Packers will sign an All-Pro support contract Jare Alexander to extend the contract. It’s just a matter of when and how much.

It happened on Monday, and it included a signing defensive-record bonus of $30 million as part of a four-year, $84 million deal, said Alexander’s agent, John. Thornton, told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Alexander’s new contract averages $21 million a year, which is also a new mark for full-backs.

Alexander was previously only attached to the Packers this season under the fifth-year option of his rookie contract. That will pay him $13.294 million for 2022, and the full amount will count toward this year’s salary cap. With a prorated contracting bonus and a lower base salary of $1.076 million, Packers will create significant additional salary cap space. Prior to this deal, they had about $11 million in cap space. It is impossible to know exactly how much cap space has been created until full contract details are available.

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst has hinted that a contract extension for Alexander is not far off. When asked ahead of the draft last month if they could do a permanent deal with him, Gutekunst said: “I think we’ll get [through] draft this weekend and we’re going that route with some of those players. “

“He’s been an important part of what we’re doing; he’s been a good player for us since the day he arrived,” Gutekunst said of Alexander ahead of this season. “We really like it [an extension] happen. We have certainly been in contact with his agent and we will continue to do so over the past year. “

The Packers’ first pick (#18) in 2018 quickly became a star. He was named to the Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie team in 2018, selected as a Pro Bowl replacement in 2019 and made his first Pro Bowl in 2020 – when he also won. Second team All-Pro title.

Although he only played in four regular games last season because of a shoulder injury, he returned from a three-month absence to play in the NFC division playoffs against the 49ers. He leads the Packers in clearances in his first three seasons and has the fourth-most breakups in the NFL from 2018 to 2020 with 42, according to ESPN Stats & Information data. Only James Bradberry (with 45), Stephen Gilmore (43) and Janoris Jenkins (43) had more.

The Packers have made a significant commitment to the full-back position over the past year. They drafted Eric Stokes in the first round of the 2021 draft and then this March is re-signed Rasul Douglas with a three-year, $21 million contract.
