Heartbreak for India, draw 4-4 with South Korea to go out of Asia Cup title race | Hockey News


JAKARTA: India’s youth hockey team put on some impressive and fast-paced hockey in the Super 4s against South Korea but the overall win saw them out as a 4-4 draw ended push them out of the ring Asian Cup title race, here on Tuesday.
Malaysia’s 5-0 win over Japan earlier in the day meant that an outright victory became a prerequisite for India to qualify for the summit clash.

India, Malaysia and Korea with 5 points each in the Super 4 round but Birendra Lakra’s team is worse in goal difference.
Nilam Sanjeep Xess (9th minute), Dipsan Tirkey (21st minute), Mahesh Sheshe Gowda (22nd) and Sakthivel Mareeswaran (37th) scored for India, while South Korea scored past Jang Jonghyun (13th), Ji Woo Cheon (18th), Kim JungHoo (28th) and Jung Manjae (44th).
Now, Korea will face Malaysia in the final on Wednesday, while India will face Japan in the third and fourth place tie.

It was a showdown between the two sides as both India and South Korea tried to get the upper hand in the first round.
India awarded a corner in the second minute but Nilam Sanjeep Xess’ effort was saved by South Korea’s Jaehyeon Kim.
But in the ninth minute, Nilam scored with a light tap into the bottom right corner of the South Korean net, past Kim from India’s second corner.
The first two minutes of the first half, India was awarded a corner and Jang Jonghyun hit the target to equalize for Korea.

South Korea made it 2-1 five minutes after Ji Woo Cheon picked his spot after being fed by Jungjun Lee following a defense from Pawan Rajbhar in his penalty area.
But India equalized three minutes later when Dipsan Tirkey took the team’s third corner. Mahesh Sheshe Gowda restored the lead a minute later, sending Vishnukant Singh’s pass home from a counter-attack.
Korea was awarded a corner but this time the Indians defended well to deny Jang.
Two minutes after halftime, Kim JungHoo equalized for Korea with a beautiful goal from a dangerous angle as both teams drew 3-3.
India tried their best and restored the lead after 37 minutes through an unmarked Sakthivel Mareeswaran who touched on a Sheshe Gowda pass from the right.
In the 42nd minute, Uttam Singh missed an opportunity when he could not catch Rajkumar’s pass in front of the open goal.
A yellow card – a five-minute suspension – for Yashdeep Siwach three minutes from the third half cost India dearly as South Korea equalized once again as Manjae Jung cleared the ball long from midfield.
Just 27 seconds from the final game, Karthi Selvam came close to the winning goal for India but South Korea’s goalkeeper Kim Jaehyeon made a double save to deny the eventual title winner.
