Houston Baptist University basketball player, Darius Lee, dead at 21
Houston Baptist University is mourning the loss of one of their own.
On June 20, the university confirmed the basketball player Darius Lee died of a gunshot wound after a shooting at a gathering in his hometown of Harlem, New York.
“We are devastated. Darius is a respectable young man who loves God, his mother, his family, teammates, friends and his entire HBU family,” said James Sears Bryant, head coach men’s basketball team. Ron Cottrell said in a statement from school. “We are shocked and cannot understand this news. My heart is broken for his mother, sister and entire family, as well as our basketball team. The only thing we can find comfort in right now. is knowing where Darius is. He’s in the arms of Jesus… we know it’s true. And we’ll see Him again one day.”
While Coach Cottrell praised Lee as a great basketball player, “he’s an even better one. I can’t even think about basketball right now. I can only think of Darius already as he is. What a light in his brief time on earth. He’s a joy for the coach and we love him so much.”
