How different is Joe Biden’s ‘pivot to Asia’ from predecessors? | Politics

Video Duration 25 minutes 40 seconds

From: Inside story

On his first visit to Asia as US president, Biden wanted to reassure allies about Washington’s strategic focus on China.

It’s been a decade since Barack Obama announced the “pivot to Asia,” and successive US administrations have spoken of China’s growing economic, diplomatic, and military influence.

A year ago, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said China represented “the greatest geopolitical test of the 21st century” for the United States.

But troubles elsewhere have obscured the planned focus on Beijing, and now the US is stepping up its support for Ukraine in its war with Russia.

Does that conflict challenge America’s longstanding strategic and economic shift to Asia?
