While Bill Nye is a man of many truths – he is a martini drinker, a training model guy and a married guy – he is best known by the name Science Guy. That’s fine by him. Because in 2023, 30 years after “Science Boy Bill Nye” first aired on PBS, the bow-tie educator is still sharing the message that we need science, perhaps now granting more urgent than ever.
His 2017 Netflix show, “Bill Nye saves the world,” tackled climate change, vaccinations and diets. More recently, he was the host of Peacock’s.”Finally Nye,” in which he takes viewers through realistic but nightmarish scenarios, such as a supervolcano eruption or a worldwide power outage.
The allure is in the disturbing rationality of it all. “You might think that when there is a pandemic, people will want to see a romantic comedy or something,” Nye said. “But no, people watch disaster movies. They hired ‘Contagion.’”
Nye said the goal of the show he co-created with Brannon Braga and Seth MacFarlane was to get people’s attention. While the first half of each episode presents disaster, the second half is about solving it with science.
When Nye isn’t teaching viewers how to save the planet, he rides bicycles, eats oysters, and admires the universe with his wife, Liza Mundy. This is how he spends a perfect day in LA
8 am: Drinking coffee in bed
First of all, I turn on the coffee. I use the phrase “on” because the night before I made my coffee with the espresso machine and turned it on when I woke up. And this is possible because — product placement — I use Technivorm Moccamaster. Then I brought the coffee to my wife’s bed. For the men out there, bring the woman a cup of coffee. I’m telling you, it’s a hit with women of all ages, 60 to 106 years old. I’m just saying, those are the data [points] I have collected.
9am Go to the farmers market
We go to Studio City Farmers Marketand the three things we always buy are croissants from Organic Frog Bakery, some flowers from many different suppliers and some fish from this one supplier, who claims that all fish are sustainably caught. And we usually buy oysters on Sundays – we’ll buy half a dozen oysters, and we’ll have three by the end of the day.
10 a.m.: Make a cake
I have lived in Seattle for many years and have a scone mix made by angler. I don’t get any kickbacks from this, but if they want to pay me, I’ll agree. So Fisher’s cupcake mix is a cake. You do nothing but add water. And then you’ll have these delicious, warm, adorable cupcakes straight out of the oven. And then we almost always have a soft boiled egg with scones.
10:30 a.m.: Watch our favorite news show
We always watch “Meet the Press” that we recorded, because I don’t need all the drugs advertised in “Meet the Press”.
11:30: Do some errands
Most Sundays, I sweep the front aisle. I have a very nice tree in my front yard that gives lots of shade. Great, it’s camphor. But it does shed these little berries, especially at this time of year, so I left a broom by the front door with a holder to keep it on Rubbermaid’s wall, and I swept the sidewalk ahead. .
If I can get to the point where I feel like my desk is cleared, or my desk is cleared, or there’s no problem with all that in the weird irrigation system. mine, that’s really good.
Noon: Ride bicycle
At noon or noon, I will cycle. I used to be very good at cycling. I used to be pretty strong. I’m a certain age now, but I have five bikes.
I don’t do it every Sunday, but more than four times a year, I collect e-waste, and on the way home, I stop at the Mt. Sinai and visited the grave of his neighbor who became a dear friend. When I moved here 17 years ago, she was in her 80s. She would turn on the oven, and I would make cupcakes and bring them to her house and bake them in her oven, and then we would sit around and talk about the universe or what have you.
14:00: Visit the toy train store
Sometimes I will make trips to train shack. In the living room right now, I have a toy train. I ran it earlier today, blowing the whistle and the whistle. Smoke billowed from the engine, the giraffe lowered its head as it ducked underneath the whole thing. It just fills me with joy. And my wife is a facilitator in this. I have to say, she doesn’t discourage toy trains in any way. It’s not for everyone, but go into the Tent, meet Todd, Mindy and Chris and get a new chimney for your Christmas wooden boat – it’s a nice activity.
4pm: Walk with Liza
We almost always walk about five miles up the hill here in Studio City to a lookout point. There was a path that looked out over the Valley which was very nice, so we walked up there and went down. We’ll say hello to some neighbors.
Bob Picardo, a close friend of ours, hosted our wedding. And he said, “You know, if you’re around them, they’re always talking. They are just always talking.” Liza and I just talk all the time. And he points out to the audience, “A lot of their conversations are interesting, but let’s face it, people. A lot of their conversations are just silly. And so one of the questions Liza and I ask each other many times a day is, “Is what we’re talking about silly?” But it has been agreed that if it’s about food, it’s not inherently stupid. It was a conversation that was inherently worthy. If it’s about oyster knives, it can take half an hour right there.
5:45pm: Peel oysters and drink martinis on the front porch
I will put one of my oyster plates in the freezer while peeling oysters from the farmers market. The oyster guy will give us a small bag of ice. When I’m ready to go, I’ll take that plate out of the freezer, put the shaved ice on top, then put the oysters on it.
Then we’ll make a martini. Now I, as you probably know, like Bombay Sapphire Gin. Liza prefers Hendrick’s, so we take turns. And then in the summer, or rather when the weather turns warm, we both enjoy drinking Barr Hill gin, which has a hint of honey. So we sat on the front porch with a martini and oysters. It was a really great Sunday.
If we weren’t on the porch – it rained a few weeks ago, for example – we would sit in the living room, sip a drink, and let the toy train run in the background.
7pm: Make a barbecue for dinner
And if it’s like last Sunday, we’ll have swordfish. I cook them on the grill. Now in the modern world you don’t have to guess if the swordfish is done. I have an electronic temperature probe — it’s a product from Weber Grills. It connects Bluetooth to your phone, so you wait until the temperature is perfect, then you take it off and cook those last few degrees Celsius. By the way, I do it in metric units.
8:30 p.m.: Watch “Ted Lasso”
What we’re going to do now is watch “Ted Lasso” from a few days ago. No gunfights, no killings, no gore. What we were hoping to try, and we haven’t really succeeded, is watching two episodes — rewatching last week’s episode, then this week’s episode — but we weren’t able to do that. So it seems indulgent.
9 pm: Read a little before going to bed
Liza is an avid reader. I’m a reader, but she’s… watch out, people. So we will read and then turn off the lights after a while.
